I think the problems you had were due to the lack of kit for all conditions and a bit of naivety (I too can't do basic camping and now you know why!).  I am sure with the right kit there is no difference between a tent and a tin pot except in wind.

There is - trust me

A couple of years ago I said "never" to a tin tent but I have just made the move and I don't regret it.

What is the difference?

1. running water. May sound mad but just sticking the kettle under the tap rather than messing around water containers is great

2. Cooking in a van is so much easier especially as you have a proper domestic fridge with a small freezer box as well. Toaster, kettle and even an oven if you want one

3. Your own private washroom - wonderful

4. So warm. Heating a tent with a fan heater is a waste of energy. Heating a caravan is a lot easier as it retains the heat so camping all year round is now a possibility.

5. No more setting up in the pouring rain - heaven

We still have our tent and will use it for remote sites that cannot take vans but generally my aluminium and GRP tent will get used alot

So how come all the caravanners I know use the on site facilities?

Anyway, back to the original subject.  The only reason we went ehu was I got fed up of messing about with ice blocks so bought an electric coolbox. After 2 years of having ehu I reckon I could live without it.  if I can pick up a 3 way fridge for a decent price then I'll ditch the ehu and save meself £3 a night
