we put ours in the boot on occasions,if they don't settle in tent or awning,never had any problems with it.

Our just wont sleep anywhere but the back of the car!! It is a volvo estate so we just put their beds in there. We leave the windows open and door unlocked incase of emergencies they could get out of the windows. They bark to go to the car when we are getting ready for bed so what are we supposed to do. I had a word with our vet about it and he assured me they were perfectly Ok as long as it isn't sunny and as we are up at the crack of dawn anyway we have never had a problem. As for someone stealing them or the car.....if they want to try they are braver than me !

So they are free to get out of the car at any time overnight? I'm guessing they never have jumped out and wandered off, so I'm also guessing they aren't terriers or some other kind of inquisitive or active dog

No they are a very laid back 12 year old Golden retreiver and a cocker spaniel and they both love their sleep and once they go to bed thats it!!

Lol. My terriers regard any opening, in anything, as an opportunity for exploration. Django even has to stick his head between any railings we pass, just in case there's something interesting on the other side.

Our lovely but daft chocolate lab seems to like shoving her head through the headrests in the back of the car while we are driving!  Honestly she is daft, she then cant breathe properly and we have to pull over and get her out!  This is only when we forget to push it down so she cant do it lol our own fault really.

We have 4 labradors and all of ours sleep in a transk9 locked crate, in the car..
That's where they settle best when we are away or they are working. As long as its not overheating, it's not going to hurt.. Lots of gundog trainers including myself have to crate them overnight at venues.. I'm sure she will be happier where she feels safest.. With no longterm ill effects
