One point no-one else seems to have made is that glamping requires a huge logistical effort.  Shifting hundreds of kilos of kit just to, fundamentally, eat and sleep seems an excessive effort for me.  I just want to grab my pack and scoot off.

I wouldn't glamp not because it's not 'real camping' but because I just couldn't be arsed lugging so much gear about the place.  And all those endless lists etc...c'mon just go on holiday and chill.

Horses for courses, though, I reckon.  For a lot of people, the effort is part of the fun!

I don't usually camp for longer than two nights, so I don't like the hassle of the Normandy-landings-style exodus, and we don't have the size of car you'd need for it.  If I did camp for a fortnight, I'd need considerably more kit than we use now, I think.  And we took a lot more stuff when we had kids, and a bigger tent.

I do enjoy making the lists, though.  It's the part which gives me a kick, because it's full of happy anticipation of the trip!  So even when we go in a two-man dome with a single canister burner and head-torch for light, I still make that definitive list, and feel proud when I produce that spare guyrope we suddenly need in the middle of the night! 17

And it's funny, I'm easy-going at home, and not specially house-proud, but when I'm camping I'm Ms. Control-Freak, and Everything We Need For This Trip Has To Be There And No More! 17  It's an exact science for me, and part of why I enjoy it!

That's the beauty of camping.  Your 'home-from-home' is precisely what you want it to be!  (Except that I suspect we'd all like to spend a lot more money on it to hone our set-up and make it perfect! 17)

Hi,

I get it all the time, hubby is from Alaska and his family are always saying when they see our pics"thats not proper camping". It does get me annoyed as like others have mentioned camping is what you make of it. We have been camping in Canada and the US but live here and enjoy camping with the 'luxury' of  a tent that you can stand up in and a few clothes.. all i say is that they should come over here and try it and then see what its like before critising.

Here are a couple of stock replies that you could try:

"That's not camping"
So what would you call it then?

"You might as well stay in a hotel"
Why bother staying in a hotel when you can be more comfortable, with more space and nicer sourounding at a much lower cost by staying in a tent?

Patricks40's replies are perfect (another one is "oh 17 off " but that's a bit rude) I reckon !

If I'm very honest the OH & me have talked about some of the various comforts available & have looked at each other & said (both at the same time) "that's not camping really though is it ?" but xammy we wouldn't dream of saying so to anyone else-  er I think I just did mind you.... ? 17  !!! Seriously we both take some stuff that some very `serious' campers would say the same about. What a dull old world if we all did the same. There's always some smartass ready to tell you how to run your life/holiday & try to put you down, usually it indicates a teensy bit of envy - or just plain meanness !

Do your own thang 17 !!!

Great you enjoy your list making though I don't need a list to take a spare guy line.

The 'home from home' comment is telling - I regard my tent as a highly temporary shelter to keep the worst of the elements from me.  Not being wet and cold constitutes comfort...  If you are going to have double beds, sofas, cupboards etc in a tent then it's not such a great leap to TVs, a Wii, Dolby surround and all the modern push-button junk I am trying to get away from.  Of course, some people are unable to exist without all kind of gadgets but is that entirely healthy?

For all the 'each to their own' ideals here - some of the above items still seem a little controversial?

Smashing, I get what you are saying but I think people go camping for different reasons and to get different things out of it.   For me, we live in the Netherlands in Rotterdam. I'm not sure if you've ever visited but it's an ok enough city but there is not a lot of space and you can never get out of your own way. We live in a 3rd floor walkup in the middle of the city and in the summer what I am looking for is a place where I can go, hang out, lay in the grass if it's sunny, take a short walk to somewhere that I can swim to cool off or just be able to hang out and have my dogs outside with me etc.

That said, I'm NOT really a rough it type. I'd probably be perfectly happy in a trailer or something but obviously this is much cheaper and with a nice big tent we have space for the comforts of home we want and also get to rough it a LITTLE so we still feel like we are camping out.

If it were, for me, just about keeping the elements off me, I'd stay home. The rain isn't going to get me there! :P

I don't think any of us needs a list to remember a guyrope, eh? 17  I find even when camping minimally, with a two-man dome and a couple of sleeping-bags, it's still possible to forget something important.  Like matches... a can-opener... toilet-roll... the asthma meds.!  A friend of ours got to the outer limits of North Wales last month, at eleven o'clock at night, and realised he'd left the tent on the drive in Liverpool! 17

You don't want to mention camping Dolby Surround-Sound here, though!  A great idea like that could catch on! 1717
