At the end of the day though it boils down to an individual's own risk assessment, and we all make different decisions.

Would I be right in thinking that an individual's own risk assessment and different decisions might have consequences for other tenters/caravanners?

That would be my feeling.

hi everyone. i see there was mention of the suitcase stoves. i have the camping gaz stove. i was wondering if there is a government body that examines all these before being allowed on the market. bearing in mind it is an explosive item in the wrong hands. i am refering to all aerosol stoves ,

Yes, If you buy from a regular supplier, they will have passed one or another safety test  .  But you then let people use them and abuse them.   How many of us have left equipment packed away for the last 6 months and hope they are alright for the first camp of the year.

The recommended life for gas pipes from bottle to stove is thee years,  now hands up how many of us have changed the hose every three years.

Which ever system we use bottles, canisters, EHU,  We are responsible for our and others safety.

I come from a background that used canvas frame tents that were designed with a designated kitchen area, I still cook in the tents, & we have used a gas cylinder fire before but I always take the cylinders fully out of the suitcase stove when finished cooking, & on the main double burner stove I always turn the gas bottle off once finished - but didn't know about changing the pipe every 3 years - that'll mean another trip to the camping shop - oh what a shame!

For those of you who are worried about a fire in your tent you may consider what I took delivery of this morning and that is a skirting radiator. It's only 500 watts so no worries about tripping the EHU. I've got it on now and it feels very comfortable best of all it's silent..I got it from Amazon and if you choose express delivery you'll receive it tomorrow. It cost around 40 quid including the express delivery.

My thoughts go out to the family..

Just thought I would share another story which happened to a friend of mine...

They were in a six berth frame tent and she and her son who was about 10 at the time were in the bedroom.  Her OH was changing the gas cylinder just before breakfast when some gas escaped and it exploded.

They all managed to escape although the tent was a gonner.

She says it was very frightening..... then, when telling the story she fades into a fit of the giggles.....

Apparently a concerned camper came running across the field in his Superman PJs..

It's good to be able to laugh about these things after the event.  The Superman PJ's story is certainly worth telling.

I feel sorry for the family and lucky they all went to the toilet block together when they did,

i was looking at getting 1 of them heaters and then i did not bother, we use a small electric here which we have on very low to take the nip out of the tent, this is lifted off the floor and away from the door and sides, turns on and off when it gets to a certain temp. after reading this i think we will be using more clothes next time
