Well thanks for your replies folks .

I shall love a trip to Cornwall, perhaps next year, early summer, to avoid the August crowds. 2 people I know locally have had holidays in Cornwall this year. Normally I go to the East Coast, Norfolk, and it only takes 2 hours, so the thought of such a long drive is a bit daunting.

Go for it chinagirl!

You are certainly wise to choose early summer when it's uncrowded. There are some really great campsites all along the north coast and many have earned glowing reviews here on UKCS. Many of them are within walking distance (or, at worst, five minutes' drive) of fantastic beaches, especially those on the north coast west of the River Camel estuary.

Regarding the distance, allow all day and take a couple of lengthy breaks. That way it will be like driving to Norfolk - but twice.

In fact, the journey itself can become part of the trip. Two hours from Northampton should get you well on the way to Bristol so you could perhaps have an early lunch somewhere in the Cotswolds. Or you could push on past Bristol on the M5 and leave the motorway to take an hour or two for lunch near Bridgewater, Burnham or Highbridge. From there, another two hours will get you to the Tamar and into Cornwall.

Cornwall is roughly eighty miles from east to west (Launceston to Lands End). The best beaches (though it's a hotly debated assertion) are on the north coast. There aren't that many beaches west of St Ives however.

As I said in an earlier post, perhaps you can find someone to share the driving (and share the fuel cost too)?

I hope you have fun planning your trip and a great holiday when you go.

A PS to the preceding post:

For anyone travelling on the M5 who can't stand motorway service areas but wants to take a break south of Bristol, here's a place I found recently.

Leave the M5 at Junction 24 just south of Bridgewater. Take the exit off the roundabout heading east (it is a small road and I think the sign points to Huntworth). Follow the lane through a hamlet and look out for signs to The Boat And Anchor pub (TA7 0AQ for your satnav). In fact, you can see the pub from the southbound carriagway as you approach J24.

The pub stands beside the Bridgwater to Taunton Canal, close to the motorway. It is quiet and although it has a posh restaurant it also does reasonably priced bar lunches. Outside there are plenty seating areas.

The canal towpath is very pleasant for strolling or letting your dog stretch its legs.

I love treyarnon bay, spent many good times there as a kid and we had 3 lovely days there this year. Its one of those beaches that not many really know about of go to because of the drive through the tight lanes.A lovely touch is the pool hidden amongest the rocks when the tide goes out.It felt great showing that to the wife and kids this year.

Parking is only £3 for the day too unlike the beaches near newquay charging a lot more.

Did a fair bit of body boarding but beware of the strong rip currents, you have to keep a close eye on the flag positions as the get moved often as the tide is moving. We spoke to a life guard and they had to rescue 10 people one day.

As i have family in queens i spend a fair bit of time down there, beautiful place but saturdays and fridays are just caravans and holiday makers tooing and froing jamming up all the roads in the summer.

Hi backagain, I agree - Treyarnon is a lovely place. Its main drawback, as you point out, is that it's not a safe bathing beach at certain states of the tide. I've not tried the campsite above the beach because it doesn't take dogs but there are plenty of others in the area.

You're right, too, about the congestion. The lanes down to Treyarnon - one from St Merryn, the other from Porthcothan - are very tight. Part of the problem is that many of the holiday-makers are in big 4x4s and are obviously not used to driving on narrow lanes. I suppose if you're used to driving in Chelsea, the Home Counties, or on the motorway a Cornish lane must seem like a rabbit burrow. The first sight of a tractor and they panic!

When you say you have family in Queens, I take it you mean Indian Queens not the suburb of New York?

floggitt, I wish the answer was "tomorrow". But it's likely I'll be off on another trip soon, hopefully before the end of the month but if not during October (weather permitting).

Oh, and thanks to everyone for the very kind comments about my original post.

I do Cornwall fairly regularly. Best time was coming home (about two miles from J3 M42) from Carnhell Green (about 7 miles from St Ives I think) door to door in 3.5 hours. This is a fair bit further on than North Cornwall.

Although, I should say we left Carnhell at 5am! But, we were in my partners Honda Jazz so not really a hell for leather trip either and we did do a quick pit stop at Exeter Services.

I always aim to get past Bristol by 8am and it's generally been easy going from there for me so far.

Go for it, you won't regret it. Cornwall is fantastic!

Under four hours from near St Ives to near Alvechurch is pretty good going, Tidburyboy. And, yes, it's advisable to get past Bristol before the rush hour - otherwise, I time the journey to pass there after 9.30am.

It was practically empty on the A30 and was recent (now that it virtually all Dual Carriageway)

The last time we went to Cornwall, we stayed near St Just (pretty much Lands End) and made similar time home, timing the journey from Cambourne it was about 3 hours 20 mins, so it's well "do able" even at a more sensible leaving time.

What newbies to cornwall dont realise is that cornish "hedges" are normally made of granite or similar stone but covered in hedge.Hit one of those and you can totally wreck your car.
As we were driving from indian queens we used that lane from st merryns, carefully, i might add

Ive found a lot of the beaches along the north coast have rip currents. One day i went down to great western beach in neyquay and was unable to walk out further than waist height because of a rip current pulling us across sideways with each step we took.We just went back in and went further down the beach.
If you are on a board and get caught by a rip its not so bad, you just go with it.On fistral the locals use the rips to get out to the surf. They get caught in it and let it take them out then paddle across to the waves.

If you havent experienced one its pretty intimidating when you get into one, just that one up to my waist gave me a massive respect for the ocean.

Those life guards do an amazing job but its so annoying that so many holiday makers ignore their advice on the tannoys when they could possibly lose their lives because of it.
