We have a computer spreadsheet as we have 3 areas where we keep camping stuff. The vast majority is ready packed in the side loft of the house (so very quick to pack), but the tents are kept in our bedroom wardrobes (to avoid the damage of extreme temperature fluctuations) and the airbeds, sleeping bags, microfibre towels and carpets are kept in another wardrobe (for similar reasons and to avoid potential moth damage etc).
We have several tents and setups depending on the type of camping. The majority is standard for all trips, but some things only go if we use the big tent, while others are only used with the small tents or for quick pitch touring. Having a list makes sure that we take the boxes and items needed and that we don't forget things.
When there was only 2 of us, we only had one tent and set up so lists only addressed such as footwear, food and such as cooking foil, oil etc. Now we have a 4 year old - overnight, weekend and longer stays have different setups - so having a computerised list is the best way of dealing with things.
------------- Love our set-up and need no more tents or gear, so trying to stop looking!
