Things to do before you're 40......camping was on my list......but it never happened, as life got in the way

I got talking to a friend about how I'd love to try it and she said she'd lend us a tent for a weekend to see if we liked it.... Easter, this year went with hubby, 4 children, daughter in law and 2 grandchildren (the tent was huge!) and we've never had so much fun. We've now got 4 tents between us and have been away for so many weekends or local one nighters I've lost count!

Finally put the tents into storage a couple of weeks ago and felt like crying

Granny's clothes horse with a blanket thrown over it on an adjacent farmer's field before they built a huge housing estate on it. The bombs hadn't long finished dropping.

Its never to late to discover camping as I realised. What a great story.

Get a tent out of the loft and pop over to Brook Meadows
on a bright weekend.( My aim is to camp out every month of the year.)It can be cold any time of the year and , let's face it, if we all waited for good weather there would be very little camping getting done.

I started with the guides and couple of trips with my aunty when in my early teens, then bought myself an argos ridge tent in my later teens for a few trips. Then did the packed holiday thing.

I met my ex husband skiing so we tended to have a ski holiday every year when the kids came along it got really expensive so could only afford one holiday a year and decided to get a tent, well I persuaded him as he'd never been camping before, but what great times we've had, gone from tents to trailer tent and motorhome but had to sell the van when he left last January, the day the van was driven away I went to go outdoors and bought my self a tent and havn't looked back, infact iv'e bought 3 this year and Iv'e really enjoyed getting back to tent camping.

Roll on next year, and hopefully plenty of meets with like minded people.

Cazz51....did Brookmeadows a few months ago and loved it....unfortunately (or fortunately in the current climate) hubby got a job that involves him not being here most weekends and I don't drive!

Keep looking for a small tent to use in my very small back garden so the girls and i can at least pretend lol....hubby, of course, has no idea...we're meant to be saving for a new car....the one we have is falling apart and he says if we have a bigger and better car he'll take us away for a long camping weekend, without moaning about our air beds once....how romantic is that lol

My brother says(and I agree with him) that our love of the outdoors stems from our childhood holidays at our aunt and uncles holiday hut on the west coast of Scotland. Seeing rabbits hopping around in the early morning is still a vivid memory for me!!
Camped a few times in my teens/twenties in old canvas ridge tents using old army rucksacks to carry everything usually to extend my time fishing..

Fell away from it mid twenties to mid thirties..then one year when the kids were young we could'nt afford a holiday so my then SIL lent us an old canvas frame tent(chocolate brown with gold tassles round the top....LOL!!! Very basic two weeks away in Bridlington...But we loved it...and I and some of the family were hooked.
Over the years Ive been quite happy sitting on site doing the odd tourist trip out...but find as Im getting older I use camping as a means to an end to extend my time doing other things (fishing/walking etc)Though I can still doss about on site when the mood takes me.
Given up trying to explain to folks what it is I love about camping...their loss is my gain so to speak...Only know that when a trip is immenent Im like a kid waiting for Christmas...........
Jelboy.

I never camped as a child, but when our three eldest children were little we went on a pre erected tent holiday to Brittany, mainly as it was all we could afford, but we loved it, and the children had an amazing time and far more freedom than they could have elsewhere, we could please ourselves, loved the feeling of being under canvas, and we were hooked!

We bought our own tent soon after and the rest is history, when the youngest two came along it proved to be a brilliant way to take them all away for very little money, and to give them a freedom which is unrivalled.

We have been to so many places which we would never have experienced otherwise, and have travelled with five kids as far as southern Italy, where we visited Pompeii, all around France and into Spain.

Unforgettable experiences for us all, as well as all the trips around the UK, it is far better in my opinion than just sitting back and geting on a plane to be put into the place you have selected, and stay there for the duration. Camping gives you a sense of freedom, which in this day and age is not easy to find.

As we run our own businesses, we can be contacted by email so we do not lose work, so can earn good money while we are away just by a few emails on the BlackBerry and a few calls here and there, far better than being at work!

We have even camped near to the locations where my husband works, he then comes 'home' after the shoot finishes and the children love the opportunity to see different places and make new friends.

In our line of work (Film and TV) it is impossible to book in advance as work comes up at short notice and changes rapidly, so camping is a way to take opportunities at the last minute, the trailer is always packed and ready to go whenever we get chance.

At present we are limited by school terms, exams etc but as we get older it will still allow us to get away whenever the chance arises.
