Rude and a little strange. I can understand that people want a bit of space, but when camping this is not always possible.
If the owner showed you to your pitch then other campers should accept that. They would have no idea how many other people were booked into the site.
I know that some folk pitch in strange places, when we were away earlier this summer, there were no marked pitches, put obvious places to pitch - we were bang on a lake, and one night a motor home parked on the beach, were it was obvious that people sat at night an had there camp fires - this was despite the fact that there were plenty of other places, equally as nice that they could have parked. What surprised me more was with the amount of rain that was coming down, that anyone would park so near the edge of a lake.
Mind you a few years ago, thanks to the delightful weather we had to move our tent - as soon as the people next to us vacated their pitch we moved on to it. Loads of other people were moving around as well.
Well we spend the next few days telling people not to go on the pitch that we had been on, explaining that we weren't being anti social, it was just that we had woken up one morning to find a lake inside the tent, and had had to move.
