Don't forget that in the event of an emergency stop a lot of the gear inside the car is going to hit you in the back of the head.

Not a race but 310 miles and I don't want to be sat in the car all day

Use a light chain to anchor the bike carrier to the towing eye at the rear of your vehicle...That way if disaster strikes you'll lessen the damage.

Take it easy. Even driving at 60mph will only take you 45mins longer than doing 70mph. And that's assuming it's clear motorway all the way. It's not worth rushing about with a heavily loaded car.

Watch out you don't exceed the maximum rear axle load, it can be a lot lower than you would expect given the cars maximum gross weight. The bikes on the back will shift more weight over it than just their own weight, that combined with all your other loading will add up.

Might be worth visiting a weighbridge to check before the police do.

Needless to say, if you are over your cars limits, it will invalidate your insurance which has far worse consequences than a few points and a fine for speeding.

Let us know how you get on .we always have trouble packing our camping gear in our Smartcar .never thought about a roof box and bike rack .

As you can see from my signature I am a diver. My certification allows me to dive to 18 mts. However there is nothing stopping me diving to 30mts or even more. There are no dive police. However if I end up in the pot (deco chamber) and my computer shows I was below 18 mts my insurance becomes invalid I have to somehow pay the bills (abroad) . Same with driving if you have an accident and this involves a number of vehicles and you were driving too fast imagine the cost. As others have said it is not a race. It's better to get there a bit later than planned than not get there at all.

The handling on a heavily laden car is different plus of course your braking isn't as effective. Add to that being cramped, sweaty from a long drive, whinging kids in the back, stressed from having to drive up near the car's limit...it's not a good combination tbh.

Give yourself a bit of extra time and factor in a couple of breaks. It's better to arrive in one piece and slightly less wound up from the drive, you've still got an hour or two of setup time to go, plus probably make a meal, plus get the kids settled. Transit days are really hard work, you're better off pacing yourself rather than ending up exhausted for days after, or having an accident.

In future, have you thought about a camping trailer? It may restrict you to 60mph on the motorway (plus no overtaking on the outside lane if it's 3+ lanes) but it's a lot easier on your car, easier to pack and you can put your bikes on top.

With a car the size and power of yours, I would be reluctant to go above 60 with a roof box. Sure, it'll pull O.K. but have you ever seen a roof box overtake a car when the brakes have to be slammed on? It's going to be embarrassing, picking up all the stuff off the carriageway and a 5 mile queue of slow moving drivers laughing as they pass.

What's the rush? You've got the rest of your life ahead.
