We've stuck with camping on and off for last 10 years. The worst experience was travelling 9 hours and trying to put a bear lake 6 up in +30c heat. We used to take the kitchen sink.

No we are down to a inflatable tent, basics and plan our trips better. Keep it easy.

There is never a truer word said I also have Fibromyalgia, so suffer intense pain for the majority of the time. so perhaps camping isn't the holiday for me. But I hate hotels with a passion and have grown to hate statics. So its camping or log cabins for us. The latter being way out of budget.

Apart from the kids behavior. we have done everything possible to make camping easy inflatable tent ( Vango Eclipse) which is totally awesome, despite teething problems. Double height Areobed,   electric pumps for other airbeds. The only thing missing was a nice comfy inflatable Sofa for me to sit on.

we are very minimal, cooking stuff, eating stuff, bedding; clothes, a few toys and camping chairs. portaloo.   oh and laptops to entertain kids. In fact it tent is positively underdressed for the size of it.

Still trying to figure where it went so wrong. I think it's a location thing, although the site had amazing views and everything we needed. it wasn't the kind of place we could let the kids run and everything was very spread out. The sites that have worked best for us this year are where the park and football area has been visable from the tent. Which apart from the obvious downside, worked well as the kids could play and just be supervised, whilst I rested. Which is a far cry from a park that's right near the leisure complex, arcade and pubs and was very much lacking parental supervision. Also very neat to a cliff edge that wasn't incredible well fenced.

onsite so, indoor pool and beach within easy walking are must haves. But I think the pubs and kids entertainment needs to go or be a last night treat. Basically the constant demands of the kids to do this and do that were too much for me.

Not sure about mr w, I Darent mention it to him yet but for me our camping days are far from over. I will reply properly to individual pays as I can and when u begin to recover.

Aww Katie sorry to hear you are still recovering, but then getting the kids ready for school straight after will not have helped.

Sounds like you have sorted the 'what to take' thing now but need to maybe reassess the sites you go to.

How about having a look at some camping pods. Bit more expensive than tenting but still allows you the same freedom but without the stresses of a putting it up and packing it away again.

I exoect I will be wiped out for a few weeks to come yet. when we got the refund in the first tent we did explore Camping podd and glamping. But tbh the prices were fairly so high to get one large enough for the 6 of us and they really didn't appeal to mr w, which is why we got the replacement tent. pitching and unpitching the Airbeam really is no bother, neither are the airbeds. packing the car still needs refining. But the two biggies are finding the right sites and lowering the kids expectations.

Do you have any other friends or family who camp? My OH would be happy to never camp again (although after 3 years he is getting better).

Our compromise is: no more than 2 hour drive, no more than 3 nights in a row. And preferably with my parents and their caravan nearby to amuse the kids while we set up! Our kit is at a minimum, permanently boxed and ready to go, to reduce packing time.

We started off going to sites with more facilities but went the other way this year: small field with a couple of toilets/showers, and we won't look back. SO much more relaxing and friendly. All the kids needed was a frisbee, and it was lovely to watch them play.

I hope you can find your compromise!

Jane

Maybe start again with some shorter trips a couple of days of blittering kids might be easier to handle.

Maybe just lay it on the line to them. Look kids we are trying our best here and this is what we can afford, If you want we can stay at home all holidays.

Looking back to when we were kids I too remember some of the best holidays being the ones where we stayed on sites with very few facilities.

Maybe ditch the laptops etc kids soon adapt back to what they have.

As Val says how old are they do they need constant supervision, try cable-tying their left wrists to their right ankles that generally stops them going too far or causing too much mischief

I think you've possibly hit the nail on the head there, Katie.

For me, picking the right site has always been crucial. That's why discovering this forum and the campsite reviews has been such a boon.

Although I don't have kids, I never cease to marvel at how they can make or break any social event, so I can quite see how making it right for them is a big factor. Kudos to you for aiming to address this by lowering their expectations rather than trying to meet them. If you achieve this, you'll have taught them a very valuable lesson that will help them cope with the inevitable disappointments that life brings!

If your OH could manage to be a bit more enthusiastic, it would make your task so much easier.

I hope you start to feel better soon.

Lol! Failing that, I could lend you a folding dog cage for the little ones.

Actually, my mate sent me a pic of a camping field a couple of years ago. It was of a toddler in a puppy pen with a cocker spaniel, while the adults were pitching the tent.

It was at a dog show though, so possibly didn't raise as many eyebrows as it might elsewhere.

I used to tie my toddler(s) up! I used a set of walking reins with a guy line threaded through the long strip at the back, then pegged the guy line flat on the ground on the shady side of the tent with some toys. There was always one of us there of course to keep an eye on said toddler but it meant we could peg out the tent or cook or whatever without having to chase after them every two minutes. Cruel? Don't think so, it's no worse than strapping them into their high chair or buggy after all.

I don't believe in giving kids as much as possible on the entertainment front btw, the more you give them the less they seem to do in my experience. It's like they can't focus on the activity they're doing for all the other distractions. On big campsites with lots of entertainment opportunities they're always going to be wanting to try everything at once, and with four kids they'll all be wanting something different as well. Whereas if there's only one thing to do ie the swing park, they'll all be down there together  and not wanting to be somewhere else. Take a football/badminton racquet set/putting set/board games/books/drawing stuff and tell them to get on with it. (No ball games near anyone's tents of course!) It's remarkable how much our over-sophisticated kids actually like most of this stuff once you prise their electronic gadgets out their hands.

Bored? I always had one answer to being bored and that was to supply something even more boring to do, like sweeping out the tent or the car. (Washing the car was regarded as a treat on campsite btw, lots of opportunities to get soaking wet .) Bored is a sign of lack of practice of using one's imagination and mental resources imho. And that includes the parental imaginations btw, it's not difficult to run a scavenger hunt or physical challenge game while sitting in your comfortable camp chair doing your knitting if you put your mind to it. I was famous at the cycle-rallies we used to camp at for being able to keep a gaggle of 4-10 year olds busy for an hour or two without dropping a stitch, lol.

Thank you all and Val you are utterly amazing. I have just read through every post and it would appear in this trip I did the majority of things righ. The fact "I did" probably explains my complete and utter exhaustion and pain now. OH just didn't get it. The final straw was on the last morning I was physically in to much pain to move the kampa karzi and left it for OH and it Sat there so long it got tipped over. I was absolutely fuming.

putting up the tent..... check. .... No problems the joys of airbeams.

Take as little as possible. ...... check. ..... No room in car for anything but basics.

breakfast. ...... check...... My 15 year old cooks a mean bacon butty.

lunch. ...... check....... we survived

Dinner....... fail we ate out.

Bedtime...... needs work..... But ok

kids...... cleanish, fed, safe and 2 non swimmers learnt to swim. major victory

View ...... perfect

Site. ..... To spread out and tooo much walking = me exhausted going from a to b

Kids stuff. .... ok but kids don't need discos in the evening.

OH....... needs work and and because he didn't relax the kids didn't.

But I am not giving up.

Katie

Not sure where abouts you live but a brilliant place that lets the kids run wild with good play areas is Wooghouse farm in north yorkshire. Kids just need space and a ball in my opinion.

I know a few have asked. The kids are 15, 8, 6 and 4 and tbh there behaviour was no worse camping them at home. Just at home we have a 7 ft garden gate to keep them captive.

But guess what mummy wants to camp and needs daddy to enjoy it too. so tough love startd now, we are on a serious behaviour improvement and not get your own way all of the time project. So give it 6 months they will hopefully be a fan site easier to camp with.
