I'm suprised nobody has suggested a Toyota, if we are going down the route 'of French cars c**p, not c**p' etc, bring back Moggy Minors & so on, we might as well say buy a Toyota which will of course never break down even if its 20yrs old & never been serviced in it's life.

However, the sensible advice might be that if you are considering an older car the most important thing is a service history of regular servicing & major component replacement & not really the actual car at all. Also try & find the most bog standard model you can, the less electronic gizmos, the less to go wrong.

just to add, 2 years ago i was camping at a lovely site just south of aberdeen beside a lovely dad and his 2 or 3 kids.

the kids didnt seem to be too into camping and instead all sat most of the days in the back seat of the car with the doors open and their tunes playing on the stereo whilst they were all on their game stations and hand held tv game computers.

on the last day of their holiday dad packed everything up and he seemed sad to go but the kids couldnt wait to go lol.

anyways as you do, sitting with coffee and toast in hand watched them all get into their renault scenic car and it wouldnt start - the battery had gone flat with the kids having all their gadgets plugged in, lights on and stereo on all the previous day and evening.

i said ill help you push the car to start so kids and me all pushing the car but it wouldnt budge.

turns out its got an electronic handbrake and because the battery was flat the car was stuck with the brake on!.

anyways the kind farmer who runs the site had one of these booster things on wheels and he brought that over and got them going.

so beware a car with electronic hand brake!

In 2006-7 I looked at a lot of the MPV type cars.

Personally, I didn't like the Renault because it felt very plasticky and flimsy compared to others. The only one I liked less was the Citroen.

I ended up getting a Ford Smax because it was a bit more of a car than a van. It's a bit lower than many of the MPVs, but it still has a huge boot as long as you don't have all seven seats up. If you put all seven seats up, there is room for shopping, OR a buggy, but definitely not a tent and camping stuff.

My other would be contender was the Volkswagon - is it the Tuareg or the Touran. Whichever is the bigger. From memory, I think I liked that one a little bit better, but not enough to justify the price difference.

The Smax is not my favourite car I've ever had though. It's long, and still quite wide, so it's a bit of a pain to park. And the parking sensors are utterly useless and have never worked properly. And I can't even disable them to stop them randomly beeping at me. It doesn't come with a spare tyre, just a can of foam. However it's now five years old, and has been reliable so far. No problems other than the parking sensors. I get about 35mpg in my 2.0L diesel where I live. But when I go on holiday, I get about 48mpg.

Don't get the 1.8L diesel, it's goes like a slug. And if you can, the 2.2L would probably be a lot better than my engine. It's a bit slow in first and second. Oh, and it's useless in snow. Absolutely completely and utterly useless. It sees a snowflake and starts skating about like Bambi on ice, I've never driven anything as bad.

My favourite car would have to be my Skoda Fabia, loved that car, but Skoda didn't do a decent sized MPV at the time. Not sure if they do now.

The good thing about the scenic is the back seats slide forward to give you more boot space. But so does the zafira. We had a 07 scenic nice comfortable car but expensive when it went wrong . We preferred the zafira for camping as had a big boot. We now got a astra estate but would of gone back to a zafira if I could of found one with the same towing capacity and engine as the astra.

Well a Berlingo we used to see outside a nearby house has been replaced. By another Berlingo. They were obviously happy with it.

Field techs where I work find the Zafi underpowered when loaded. Not sure which engine it is but one of the eco ones. Mpg is way down, more than usual when loaded too. Quite a few are opting for Scenic's now they have a choice. Early days with them.

I'll second that. My partner has a Fabia 3 and it's a smashing little motor. For this year's camping trips, we're planning to fit a roof box on it so we can use it as our main camping car instead of my Mondeo.

The Mondeo isn't a bad camping car, to be fair. Cheap to buy and cheap to insure and relatively reliable. Not so great on fuel economy though (1.8 petrol) and a poor driving position for anyone under 5'2".

Just (this afternoon) bought a 2011 Ford Galaxy (feel a bit queasy having spent that much!).

We love our Citroen C8, but it's going to need a new exhaust soon, which will cost way more than it is worth. 173k miles, can't ask for too much more than that!

Fingers crossed the Galaxy is as trouble free!! Picking it up Thursday...

Funnily enough, a big bit of metal fell off the C8 literally on the way to look at the Galaxy (something protecting the rear brake calliper). Guess it was time to swap!

I am looking forward to trying my new purchase out. I had a Saab convertible which was very restricted on space.
So have now just got a 2004 BMW 5 series touring its like a cavern in there.
So more camping kit needed to be purchased now just to use up the space of course!!

I'd agree with that. Far less to go wrong on a petrol, compared to a modern EFI/Turbo diesel. Whilst it won't do as many mpg, everything else is cheaper - servicing, fuel, parts and so on.

Same here. I had a Mondeo turbo diesel and I could have had a world cruise with the money I spent on repairs.

I also loathe Renaults with a vengeance. I had a lovely 16TS in the 1970s which was good as gold, but haven't known a reliable one since then. I've been stranded by Renault 5s (2 different ones), a Megane coupe (in a tiny Devon lane the recovery truck couldn't find) a Scenic (with 5 dogs on board, at the side of the M4 - not funny), a Laguna (on the M40) and a Clio, on a steep and winding slip road.

None of them were mine, and if I'm going anywhere with a friend, I insist we go in my car if theirs is a Renault.

I've used estate cars for camping since 2007(2 Passats, one Mondeo). We easily fit in everything we need for 2 of us, the dogs travel in their cages where the back seat would be if it wasn't folded down and with stuff on the roof we managed 3 adults and gear for 4 (OH's lad rode his scooter to the New Forest and met us there).

We could probably get a lot more in if we had to by being more strategic about it.

I'm a big fan of Berlingos (Berlingoes?). We didn't get one because we never found one in our price range (ie, dirt cheap!) with air con.

Air con is essential for dogs imo, and I get grumpy if I overheat.

Well, I am now the proud owner of a KIA ceed sw diesel. Had it a week and already noticing the fuel savings. I still have the Volvo s40 until I find a buyer.
Tons of room in the back and the boot tray holds all tools and emergency stuff. The OH has now decreed that it is replacing the duster for our French trip but we will see after our first trip in May. I'll have to contact ferry and breakdown to change.
I reckon it will take all our stuff without lowering a seat with coolbox in passenger footwell. The kids have enough room in the back and if needs be I can pile stuff a bit higher due to the cargo net.
Driving wise, I miss the cruise control and the seats, though comfy, are not as good as the Volvo . It does have more pulling power and general oomph.
The dog likes it too.
