As normal I arrive late to the party I have always pegged every guy until I read the instructions that came with my retro inflatable igloo! It clearly states that the guylines do not need to be pegged unless in windy conditions and as I was only using it for one night and staying close by I adhered to these instructions and left it standing pegged by only the groundsheet pegs.

Needless to say the first slight breeze and I was there pegging all 4 guylines 'just incase' .

Must admit I was bemused by a family that pitched in front of us in Northumberland for a couple of nights during hurricane Bertha:

I was under strict orders NOT to interfere with the tent which had only been pegged down at the fly with the pegs that came with the tent no doubt. We sat watching the porch area flap about which isn't really captured well in this photo.

We also always fully guy out any of our tents, as others have said, it gives shape to the tent as well as preventing damage in windy or stormy conditions.

When we were in Gairloch in August we had some very windy weather for a few days at the start of the holiday, 47kph gusts at times, we noticed a couple arrive with a new looking medium sized vis a vis type tent, they were clearly struggling to pitch it, so my husband and son went over to help, and between them they all managed to get it pegged down on the corners and sides.

They returned to our tent, we then were amazed to see the couple drive off in their car, leaving the tent with all its guy ropes still tied up in neat little bundles, and looking as though any minute it would take off! The tent was flapping open as well where they hadn't closed it properly!

Amazingly the tent was still intact when they came back several hours later, they presumably turned in for the night, still not using their guy ropes, incredibly the tent was still standing the following morning.

Just to give you an idea of how windy it was for those few days, our frame tent had all the elastics (and there are a lot of them) pegged down with rock pegs, all guy ropes plus the spares attached and pegged out securely, and half a dozen ratchet straps thrown over the frame inside on both sides at the front, centre and back, and pegged down again using rock pegs.

Our tent felt quite safe for the whole of the time it was windy, and we slept well through it fine.

I will never know how those people did not lose their tent or at least end up with it damaged.

Jane.

Iv bought extra guys to add, tho in 2 seasons of camping I havent used them, they are there just incase. Bought 8 better peggs that are like big nails for the ends and just use the standard ones in between. Iv only got a cheap vango 550xl but love it and cant afford anything else.
