My house was burgled last year while i was in bed despite alarms the guy came upstairs. I feel safer in a field. The CCC clubs are good value for solo campers.

To everyone who has responded...thank you so much.
Your posts have made me really think about what i have become afraid of, if indeed anything. Thanks for the prompt to make me think abut what i was afraid of. I think what is really bothering me is feeling self conscious. Camping is for so many including me, a social activity, and most people camp in families and groups.Having had my son with me, meant i did not do it alone and kids just join in with others, and can be great ice breakers. Singles i had often thought, stand out like sore thumbs. So to the lady who offered to let me join her, and the many links inc to the C&CC, i will try them all. Camping is a broad church and always has been...and my attitude is usually 'just do it'. I will apply it to this too....dorothy

I think any solo camper male or female knows that "sore thumb"feeling only too well sometimes....But I have never let it put me off going camping....

Yes I have had the trips where the only folk I have spoken to are the fella in reception when paying...A quick good morning to someone on the way to the toilet block.....The assistant in the local shop...Or the barmaid in the pub!!!

But those situations I have found to be in the minority....I have been in the company of some cracking people...Who...Up until I got to the campsite were complete strangers...All done in a way that meant I did not make a pest of myself....Nor they to me...

And most of those times started so simply....By lending a mallet for tent pegs...Holding a tent pole while someone pegged it out...Both me for them...And they for me....

You never know what can happen on site....Get out there and go with the flow of your w/end/week away...You might be pleasantly surprised...

Jelboy.

Alternatively you could join one of the meets which are organised through this forum.

Dear Armchair camper - where on this site are the meets posted? Dorothy

Hi Dorothy - click on 'All Forums' at the top of this page, in red, and scroll down the forum titles until you come to 'Meeting Up and Getting Together'. Or click here as a shortcut.

A lot of my camping involves meeting up with other campers I've met through this forum.

I find having something planned helps. I usually arrange a trip around a place of interest e.g. a NT property or an interesting town.
I've not done rallies but some are arranged around hobbies e.g photography, walking which would be an icebreaker.   There are also a couple of groups for solo campers, have a look at the phoenix group or the new companions.

I think I am safer when I solo camp .....when I camp with friends they ply me with alcohol and make me get up to all sorts of shenanigans

seriously tho I do feel safe when I solo camp and never had any reason to feel otherwise. If I felt threatened in any way I would just scream at top of my voice

I guess it's not that common to see solo campers. However, for what it's worth I recall seeing a solo female camper on a site in Oxfordshire. My only thought was "Good for her!"

Go for it and I hope you enjoy yourself

I've camped on my own a fair bit(well, with just a dog or two for company). I've never felt unsafe and I thoroughly enjoy it.

People often offer to help pitch, although I last solo camped with a big Khyam (XL Excelsior) which is a doddle to put up solo. I felt quite smug when I overheard a couple debating whether I put "that big tent" up by myself. (The man thought I couldn't possibly have managed it, the woman was betting him I had!)

At one site, a friendly group of bikers invited me to join them round their campfire, fed the dogs sausages when they kept an eye on them while I was in the shower, and came and helped me load the car - they were just angels, not hell's angels. They looked scarey, but were really kind and charming.

I prefer sites where there is an owner or manager in residence, and agree that C&CC sites are excellent in that respect. At a pub site at Ford (West Sussex) the lovely owner came and made sure I was ok last thing and first thing and gave me her personal mobile in case of problems in the night.

I've always found it enjoyable and very relaxing, being able to do just what I please, when I please. And the vast majority of people are friendly and helpful.

was that Ship and Anchor? the lady who runs that site is very good - I've been there with friend and her kids but would be perfectly happy to go on my own :)
