We've never used EHU and investing in a decent is (as already mentioned) is the way to go. We freeze a 2litre lemonade bottle filled with water and freeze as much stuff as we can. I've started this year using a thermos flask to keep the milk in and so far it seems to keep the longer.

Re-fire lighters. I use the cotton wool discs soaked n melted candle wax. Make a load up before you go, when you want to use them simply break one in half and light the fibres. Get the cheapest cotton wool discs you can find.

Take which ever tent you feel comfy with. And I would pack the suitcase stove too.

Good luck

Icey Tek, Yeti or Waeco cool boxes are the biz for non EHU, but are about twice the size of a Mini .

Well, my first "back to basics" camping trip is sorted - I am going 3rd-6th August with middle son.
2 of my friends and their kids are also joining me as they thought it sounded like an adventure so it should be a good trip!

Menu is planned, kit will all be checked next month and then at the beginning of August it will just be a case of loading the car and off we go!

Thanks for all the really helpful advice and comments - they are all very much appreciated.
I will make sure I take plenty of piccies to share xxx

Are you going to Muker? If so, and you want some company, I'm just over the hill in Kirkby Stephen

Were going to go to Muker but wanted to try a real "back to basics" camp with no toilet/shower block, EHU or home comforts!
Decided to try Keld so will only be about 8 miles from Kirkby Stephen.
You will know who I am - my car is pretty unmissable!!

Great thread to read, i'm a solo female camper (also a family camper)i'll put my 2 penneth in from personal experience

1. For me a 3 or 4 berth tent which is easy to erect suits me fine, Vango Ark 400 is the one I usually use in which it has held its own is some horrendous winds and weather, just remember to pitch bottom in the wind.

2. Cooking, for me the BCB crusader words fine, I altered to heating method to fire rope and liquid fuel. I also use a Swedish Trangia which is bullet prove and a few other stoves, can never have enough stoves

3. For me the way forward is solar power, it charges my phone so that will do for me.

4. Foooood... as i'm a bit on the prepperish side SHTF type of person I buy army rations, no fridge necessary, and they are boil in the bag. There are lots of boil in the bag ambient foods these days from rice to puds.

5.   Safety, I have not had cause for concern about my safety, but I always tell the owners that I am alone which is just for peace of mind.

Hope this helps a little, go for it and enjoy.
