we camped with 2 sets of twins, then went on to tourer caravan, then to a static caravan.unfortunatly static had to go at 10 years old and we didnt know what to do next so i asked the kids, now age 30 and 23 what they fancied,no one came up with answers so i said ok,what was the most fun, what did you enjoy the most, the answer from everyone was camping,so we all got our own tents and after a gap of 20 years are starting again this year.just going to places within one hour for weekends while we relearn this camping lark,im sure its like falling of a bike though.once youve done it it soon comes back to you.reading all the points on here has really helped.

Thanks for all the advise above. We are also new campers and are hoping to go away for weekends with our kids(2 1/2 and 6 months). Like Claire (original post) we live on the Wirral and we will definately be taking Pegwils advise and looking for campsites in Cheshire.

The Good thing is we have bought a Monty 6 and took it to Leasowe Common yesterday to set up and it only took us 1/2 hour (without Children)!!! So hopefully the set up time will be a little quicker!

If you feel like venturing a little further south into north Shropshire there's a farm site we stayed at a couple of weeks ago just south of Whitchurch. It's a fairly ramshackle farm and very basic but people who have stopped there have been very impressed with it. There's not a pub or streetlight for miles but if it's isolation you prefer it could be for you. Take a look at the reviews.

We have camped with our 3 year old since he was 6 months.  We often go for weekends, off next weekend actually, but only go 15 miles away.  We often have extra snacks, such as crisps, biscuits, fruit and he often is happy to sit in the car munching whilst we set up camp, which takes us approximately 1 hour from start to finish.

All our camping stuff is packed into lidded stacking boxes and large holdalls, so its all ready to pack into the car, what takes the longest is getting it all down from the loft, but its not a problem.  I often freeze a sausage casserole and then by the time we are ready to eat its defrosted and then we reheat it and have crusty bread.  So a meal that takes about 10 mins.

We also keep a bag of special toys for camping trips, so that they are like new each time he gets them out, he also adds a couple of everyday favourites.  All in all our weekends camping are fairly chilled.

I decided that if we take the big tent then we have to spend at least 2 nights in it. So our normal routine is that I load up the car on the Friday and get the chores done (as it's my day off of work and I like to make sure the house will be tidy when I get home) Hubby will go to work early so that he can finish at the same time that the kids finish school. Then they get back and get changed and we go off. The kids have a snack on the way in the car and then the 4 of us set up the tent, we all have our jobs to do and so are getting into a nice little routine. Then we have the evening to relax and have a full day saturday, the on the sunday we'll sometimes laze around the campsite and pack up the tent at the last possible moment, or we'll get the tent packed up after breakfast and go and do something on the way home. We tend to go away every other weekend and so far it works for us.

Like others say you will find it gets easy.
