I used to live in South Africa so it's just habit really ... there we use to chain everything down...

I suppose there's no point in locking it other than it being a deterent... if they want in they'll get in for sure ... also there's the risk of the tent getting damaged if locked.

If you lock your tent people will think there`s something worth pinching inside and they`ll just slash the canvas instead.

Keep your valuables in the car.

The thing that put me off the TBS Vango tents was the tension straps in the living area.

But it would appear you only have to attach these when needed in high winds.

Is that correct? If so I will have another look at that range because the small Vango tent I got for my young lads is excellent.

Yes, you only put them up when needed. As I've not put mine up yet I can't say if I'll have them up all the time or not. (Will know tomorrow as we're off for a weekend away )

But we did have a look at a few tents that were on display and I tell you what, that TBS thing was pretty stable when I gave it the handshake test. Thing is, I hadn't even noticed the TBS straps that were up until we went for our final viewing and being told about the TBS system by the shop owner ...

Only two TBS straps were up, one on each end... and even with it like that you'd still be able to get into your beds without a problem. The living area has one also but that wasnt done up. You don't need to put it up if you don't want to. You could even put up the left or right side only if you wanted too. (Depending on direction of wind type thing)

It was definatly much more stable than any of the other big ones on display, even without the TBS straps which we tried with a quick unclip.

If you can, try find a place that has one on display if anything and have a look. You'll be well impressed I recon.

Cheers... TJ

Yes, that`s correct...you only put the straps up when the weather is windy. The rest of the time you coil them up and tick them into the handy pockets that Vango provide for this purpose at the base of each pole.

As  RFC 1795  says though, the bedroom straps hardly get in the way of going in and out the pods at all. I put these ones up at night, irrespective of the weather, just in case the wind gets up while we`re asleep. I clip the other ones into place when we go out for the day if the weather looks poor. Only takes a second.

Having said that, I`ve only been out in my 600 once in the sort of wind that I felt the straps were even slightly neccessary. The rest of the time it`s a really stable tent anyway, even without the straps, because it has a lot of guylines and a nice long smooth wind shedding profile. Pitched with a narrow end into the wind, of course! (On the 800 you have a choice of either narrow end, of course, but with the 600 it`s best to put the large pod end into the wind, because it has a doorway at the other and less pegging points.) But during that one very blowy trip when the wind was swirling and coming in high speed gusts, I thought the TBS straps very useful. My Gelert Cadiz 5+ 2 on the pitch next door was trying to turn itself out and had to be double pegged and double guyed to keep it stable, but the Oregon barely rippled.

Nice tents. I think they`re  becoming one of the understated classics in the range, myself, because while they`re never going to be the sexiest looking tent on the display field they`re roomy, versatile, stable, easy to put up and a very good price for what you get.

Cheers for that info RFC 1795 and Valk_Scot.

I am going to check the TBS Vangos out again. This sounds like a very good feature!

In fact I think I have a Vango catalogue in my extensive tent catalogue collection so will check it out the now

We have the Oregon 800. The tension straps don't really get in the way and are only for use in windy weather. We used them in really windy weather recently and they worked brilliantly.

We have a  Vango Quest 600, and we put the straps up when we go out in case the weather changes whilst we are away from the tent. We have survived a serious Lakeland storm last year that had other tents badly battered, and we put this down to combining the TBS with good ole DELTA pegs....tent was rock solid, and tunels are often regarded as the least stabel of the varoius modern shapes....

AND you can use a strap as an indoor washing line too - how's that for added value!?
