Stuffed isn't just a trick - it's the right way to pack them. Rolling them may overstretch and tear the internal stitching, or the baffles if they are down bags.
But don't be tempted to leave them stored like this long term - a sure way to reduce the loft or to keep damp in them - always shake them out and store them in as much space as you've got (I know, I know...).
I saw it seriously suggested a while ago that tents too were better stuffed than folded. The reason given was that if you were constantly creasing them and rolling them along the same lines you'd weaken the fabric at those points. I'm not going for that, though!
