Hi all
Val booked us into a site in whitchurch, this site as some excellent reviews and price is what you would expect to pay for a caravan awning with electric and two people,£13.00 and a two man tent without an EHU £9.00.
When val booked she said we had our small tent 12x8 and our kitchen tent 6x4foot she was then told that the tent was oversize and with the kitchen tent the price would be £12.50. Val booked before she told me.
Now let us put this in perspective Our tent is one foot smaller in lenth than a 10 foot caravan and it draw bar
but four inches wider. our kitchen tent is smaller than any porch awning on the market.
The Price at this site for a 20ft caravan porch awning with an EHU is £12.00 To charge us 12.50 for our small tent and porch awning without EHU is in my opinion, Discriminating against me as a tent camper.and Could be against the law.
Still I have now got my own way and val as agreed to cancell, and promised not to book any more sites that try it on.
I can not do the phoning as I am very hard of hearing and cannot understand voices on the phone.
But as Val said they sounded very nice people I have been instucted not to email them with the reson for our cancellation
It would be nice if these site owners would join our forum to put their side of the story and posibly learn were we think they are going wrong,we will have to wait untill their greed as got a family burned or even killed before this get sorted out.
Regards
Rex

We have never felt the need for a kitchen tent as we`ve always managed to cook outside. If it was absolutely chucking it down then we could use the cooker in the porch area of the XXL with the front open or side windows..could also cook at the front of the Monty 6 with the front open The cooker would have to be slap bang in the middle of the porch though and well away from the sides.

If all else failed and the weather really was too bad to cook and we couldn`t leave the windows/front open then we would get a takeaway.

Hi beezers
Before we were aware of the safety and ease of use of a purpose made kitchen tent we always cooked in the kitchen area of the andorra but we have had flareups and fat splashed all over the canvas and floor of our previous andora,as they say you learn by your mistakes. Lucky we did not burn our tent down and now we have just bought our second kitchen tent. And we think that some site owners are taking advantage of the reason why we are using a kitchen tent.just to make more money.and this is not only wrong of them it is unethical.

We have never had to cook inside the tent before, although we have used our mini electric oven inside. I use a splatter guard over the frying pans, to stop the fat splashing and I cannot recommend them enough  To be honest though, if we had to cook inside, I think it would be something we didn`t have to fry or grill just to be on the safe side.

I do agree though that the pricing of pitches on camp sites is haphazard to say the least. We have two large tents and have had it said before that we should pay extra because of this, but we have seen people with smaller tents than us that take up more room with kitchen tents, toilet tents and pup tents. Maybe if prices were based on pitch size and NOT on size of tent or what you put on the pitch, it would be fairer all round. that way you work out what space you need and pay for the right size pitch for you.

Hi beezer
But who is going to come up with a pitch size. All caravan sites are self regulating after the initial check by the local government inspection team, and issue of the licence,
they soon realise there is more money in not setting market out pitches for tents. As for cost they can charge whatever they think we campers will pay for the temporary loan of their few square meters of field.
We knock the C&C Club sometimes but at least we know exactly were we stand with them.
No I have only gone to book two private site this year and both had size limits for tents way bellow the size of a 4 berth frame or tunnel tent.but I did not use these site and I will not.If we all refused to use the worst of these sites I am sure they would see sense.
Still me going on here wont help the matter,
Maybe we should picket outside these sites with Banners

our small tent 12x8 and our kitchen tent 6x4foot

If you pitch an 8ft and 4ft wide tent next to each other, even if you overlap the guys between them, you are going to take up a pitch some 18 feet wide by the time you have guyed them.

My 5 berth caravan is about 7 feet wide and the full awning is about 9 feet - 16 feet altogether. My 4 berth tunnel tent may only be 9ft 4ins wide but the guys take another 3 feet either side, meaning it takes up a space only 8 inches less than the caravan and awning together. Lengthways it is 16 feet plus guys either end - 22 feet. My caravan is 17 feet plus A frame - 20 feet.

So there isn't really much in it either way. If I wanted to pitch a kitchen tent alongside then the tent option would definitely need a much bigger pitch. Added to that is the fact that on the whole caravanners will make use of their on board facilities and so will use the site facilities less than tenters. I know I certainly use the toilets, showers, washing up sinks etc far more when I am tenting. I am also likely to use a lot more electric for heating as tents are not as well insulated as caravans.

So surely it would not be unfair to charge me more for my tent than for my caravan and awning?

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.

Hi caz
You are missing the point of the post,Tent campers are using Small kitchen tents for safety as well as the ability to stay dry while preparing a meal,
If you read my post about 5 back you will see what came up on size and discrimination. But there is more to look into this,A lot of campers start out with tents as other forms of camping are beyond their reach, and if you read the post on tent safety you will see why it is recommended that tent campers with SIG should use Kitchen tents and why I personally say that campsite proprietors should make provisions on the grounds of safety for standard size tents
with SIG free of charge or at least say a one of payment of £5 a week If their greed over safety needs to be fulfilled.
I think that most tent campers accept that if they have a
huge dome tent with pods they will be expected to pay more for their tent than a tunnel or frame. On some sites.
Regards
Rex

Personaly I think we should all just pay for a pitch no matter what size and base it on the occupants, this also makes it fair to solo campers and those with one child be it grandchild or child...

On the said pitch you should be able to put what you wish as long as none is taking the mickey....

This goes for caravans campers and tenters....

Hi daisybev.
Agreed 100%.But the problem is who is going to set the size of the pitch,This idea of your's works well for the C&C Club.
