Where does it live when you're camping? This is a bone of contention between me and my OH. Our tent was only wee so it used to live in the car when it wasn't being played but now we have a considerably larger tent with a living area the guitar stays with us. Every bloomin' time I went to sit down the guitar had nicked my chair!! When it didn't have it's own seat, it was on the floor taking up tons of space and in serious danger of getting damaged. Then at night of course the guitar had to join us so I had loads of stuff and the dog on my side of the bed whilst the guitar lounged on it's picnic blanket on the other side. We've got a folding guitar stand at home - would it be ridiculous to take it camping?

What do you sit on whilst you're playing? My hubby struggles in our normal folding chairs because of the arms so we've just bought some cheapies without arms - take up less room in the car and tent too

To hopefully address all these issues, I've just bought one of these:

http://www.playawayguitars.com/play_away_guitars_shop.php?itemID=837

(secondhand for £50 +P&P)

It should arrive today...

This is an amazing little guitar. I say little, but it isn't a toy. I'm playing Bass at the minute in a band and took this Mininstar Rokstar to a practice the other night - into a Way Huge Pork Loin (as used by Mr Bonamassa) and then into an Ashdown bass Amp. It sounded immense, and the sustain is incredible - couldn't stop doing the Parisienne Walkways stuff a la Mr Moore.

You have to be a little careful playing seated as the strings wrap around the end of the guitar, so loose clothing can damp the strings if you play with it rammed into your inner thigh (!) but proper use of the leg rest solves that.

Highly recommended.

My OH insists on bringing his Martin acoustic camping. It's auditorium size, so not huge, but it still gets in the bleddy way all the time. He insists on it having its hard case, for protection, we have no end of trouble getting it in the car, and I have the same problem as you about finding it in my chair. (On one trip, I got so cross about this I contemplated sitting on the damn thing and pretending I hadn't noticed it, but decided it was a) childish and b) a crime to trash £900-worth of guitar to make a point). The folding stand is a good idea, but only if your dog won't knock it over! This is another constant worry - the dogs knocking it, or jumping into a chair when the infernal thing is in occupation.

He used to insist it stayed in the tent overnight, in case anyone broke into the car. I used to get up and fall over the damn thing. I managed to convince hom it was safer in the car, as the car doesn't leak and the tent might, plus the car is alarmed, unlike the tent.

To sit on while playing, he bought one those 3-legged folding stools with a fabric seat and finds it works a treat.

He only ever plays for 40 minutes or so, does so very quietly and never after 10pm, and we've never had a complaint yet. He broke his little finger earlier this year, and hasn't got much movement in it yet, so with a bit of luck he won't bother taking it this summer (if he deigns to come with me, which he probably won't).

I'm sure the last 3 of your questions could have one very simple answer if it irritated others nearby. Don't think you'd get much of a tune out of it afterwards.

Where do you pack it?
Where does it live when you're camping?
What do you sit on whilst you're playing?
