 i have never had anything taken but common sense tells you to locjk valuiables away if you are out for the day. i do however always lock the bikes to each other.

I've had a Thule roofrack stolen and also two body boards - both at Croyde

On a French Aires last year the local Rozzers showed up. The M/home next to me had two tatty old bikes on the rack. It turned out that the poor man had his two really good Cannondale bikes right at the back of them; nearest to the vehicle. Some-one had them though and had gone through a good quality steel chain to get them

Never had anything stolen at all, anything valuable gets locked in the car (not that I take much valuable stuff with me) If we go out for the day we just pull table, chairs etc under the awning, and that's only to keep them dry if it rains while we are out.

We only stay at very small sites and see the same people time and time again, so I don't think it's fellow campers that you have to worry about, but the opportunist thieves, we have all our camping gear included in our home insurance now, it was only a few pounds more, but well worth it, at least you get a bit of piece of mind when you go away from the site.

But christmas 1977, was in Snowdonia camping along the A5 (Willies as it was then known) as we returned to the site where there had been 3-4 tents that morning there was now only one Ours, but it looked a little strange. Our Blacks Mountain Tent was missing its fly sheet, it took about an hour to walk to the tent from where we had realised the fly was not on and we had discussed every possibility.
On unzipping tent door there was our flysheet neatly folded with a little note explaining that the night before (while we were bivi-ing in the mountains due to weather)the wind had picked up and our fly had ripped, to prevent further damage someone had removed it and placed it in the tent.
The good samaritains left no details of who they were so we never had a chance to thank them. This sort of behaviour is what I have come to think of as REAL campers and to date have never been let down.

When we decided to start camping (couple of years ago) I trawled the Internet trying to find security devices (padlocks/sensors etc) mainly due to naivity 

I then read an old thread on here which advised on security and also pointed out the obvious - a padlock etc was no match for a stanley knife!! 

So it was with tredpidation that we camped for the first time (no doors to lock  was a worry in itself)

I can't stress enough the surprise we felt over our first few camping trips - an overwhelming majority of people we have met are honest, decent, friendly and helpful - I only wish that this was reflected in society as a whole  

.......... there was one time, though, a couple who were under the impression that everyone should love their kids & dog, no matter who they upset - but we wont go into that ~ I'm sure that the new style ASBO will take care of them in good time!!
