Crikey, you can say that again!  Reminds me of a neighbour's child (aged 7) who asked me where we were going on holiday and when I said "Cornwall to stay in a caravan", she replied "Oh how horrible! Can't you afford to go on a proper holiday?! We're going to Spain on an aeroplane!"  Funnily enough, I avoided conversation with her after that...

At least she was only seven.  For Speedcamp's caravanners there was no excuse!

We have been tenters for years and I will always love camping but with the kids and all their stuff and all ours too I do find the packing and putting up and taking down a complete chore. (Plus as we don't have a spare bedroom or dry garage to put all the stuff in before we go, my eldest's bedroom looks like a branch of Millets in the preceding weeks!) Back in the day when it was me, hubby, our little Terra Nova (pitch time-5 mins) kettle, gas stove, 2 karrimats and sleeping bags, and hip flask it was great.

We have had a couple of campervans over the last 5 years and now have one again, but last summer we spent our main summer holiday in our North Face family tent (also relatively easy to pitch). The weather was on the whole fairly kind so we could sit out most nights, which was lovely ( we were pitched next to the campervanners and caravanners, who on the whole didn't sit outside at night, but pretty much all the tenters did). However, the weather broke towards the end of the week, the forecast for the last day booked was awful, we were kept awake the last 2 nights by wind and even worse-inconsiderate campers till 3am, and I felt like a zombie due to lack of sleep so we came home a day early. At least in the van it is weather tight and keeps some of the sound out (and in!)

Both campervans and tents have their pluses (though personally never cared for caravans-or even a big MH) but for me campervans are the better option. Having said that, I would love to have a weekend just with OH and our walking boots in the Terra Nova again!

If I were to win the lottery I'd be buying myself a motorhome. I know exactly which one I want too having been to the Motorhome and Caravan show last weekend! Would love a caravan with a good awning on it, I'm sure that would still be quicker to set up than pitching our Vermont XL, but I really don't fancy towing, and whilst hubby says he'd feel happy to tow, he'd need to take another test and I personally think he'd not be as good at towing as he thinks he might.... We wouldn't use the motorhome for driving around on holiday as we tend to go to places that we don't need to use the car even now.... only use the car to do a week's shopping, which we wouldn't need to do with a motorhome as we could actually put shopping in it before leaving home (no room to do that with all of our camping stuff in our car/roofbox!). Would probably put a bike rack on it though and could get about using bikes, which would be a great family activity as well. But, I still wouldn't want to get rid of the tent.... would still like the option of proper camping because as someone else said earlier, I don't really see motorhomes and caravans as 'proper' camping! And for the record, I haven't found most tent campers to be as friendly as everyone seems to like to make out, just as many caravanners or motorhome occupiers have spoken to us as those in tents.
