Thank you vonc for the information. As someone who is just starting out I never even thought of insurance.

I agree with you, for that small price it's worth it for peace of mind.

I checked with my insurer Nationwide we are covered under our contents under possessions away from home and this includes camping equipment.

Just been having another think about this. We too have our van insured separately from personal items (which are covered by house insurance). However, if things did go up in flames, that would mean two claims and two lots of excess to pay?

Oh yes Caz ... Never thought about that, but if we went away without camping equipment it wouldn't be covered at all as its a specialized insurance and seemed silly paying twice , at least with personal items insured under house contents where ever we went it would be covered

Yes, if an excess applies under each policy. That's because there's two policies and two claims even though the cause of the loss or damage is the same.

Imagine your house is insured with buildings insurer A. Your contents are insured with insurer B.

Lightning strikes the house and damages the both the structure and internally, contents in the area struck. Same cause, but two insurers, two policies, two claims, and two excesses - assuming each policy was subject to an excess.

Can't believe I have only just cottoned on to that Doh! Suppose you have to weigh up the cost of the 2 x excess versus the extra cost on the camping policy. Hopefully we will never have to worry about it!

Hockeychic ... Your lucky, my contents insurer would cover me but .. And a big but if I left the camping equipment alone .. As you do on holiday and something happened they wouldn't pay out !!! I do wonder how many others might get caught out ... I only found out because I questioned them as I got caught out once with my pet insurance, it only came to light when we had to use it , so I tend to quiz all insurers now
