My grandson has just turned 7. When i took him camping a couple of weeks back he came in the ladies, don't think there was anybody in to mind.
the thing is. If he had a friend the same age or an older brother i might be happy to let him go in the mens but not alone at 7.
He doesn't even notice nudity anyway. Will happily walz in the bathroom when i'm in the shower and his eyes never leave my face.
Anyway when i'm camping i go in the shower cubilcle dressed and come out dressed, nothing to see.
I always go into the shower cubicle fully clothed, undress, have a shower, get dressed and then come out again. It makes no difference to me whether there are men or ladies outside as I am fully clothed. I also pull my knickers up before I walk out of the toilet cubicle!
I would be surprised to see a 12 year old in communal changing rooms but otherwise I wouldn't care. And if my 12 year old DD was embarassed then I'd be teaching her to get changed and dressed in the cubicle too.
I think it is more of a concern if men take their daughter's into the gents showers, this happened to my DH recently when another gent game in with his daughter, as DH says its the fact that men are using urinals, not really a suitable place for a young girl
My son is 10 (looks a little younger). I take him camping without my husband. I would not allow him to be unattended showering in the male toilets alone and he comes in the ladies with me. Where possible we would use family bathrooms. It's not that I don't trust him but the reality is that we are on a site with possibly hundreds of unknown people and I am not going to take any chances with his safety. I have often thought how difficult some situations like that can be for single parents with the opposite sex children.
i would have thought it might be better to go to a family bathroom if one is available on site, but its down to personnal preference of the adult and of course children..
I am like you both my sons have additional needs, they both use the male toilets but often go together. With regards to the showers I use the disabled facilites, if available.
I personally find the whole gender separation thing a nuisance anyway. We're at the opposite end of the age range with a toddler and an infant and I love it if we find a site with non-designated showers so we can take the whole family in to get clean at once. When there are only gender separated showers I've been tempted to go into the men's with DH and kids just to make it easier (haven't yet, but it's on the cards!). I've also been known to go into the men's toilet at events when the queue in the ladies is a mile long and never had any complaints!
Personally, I don't care who goes in which shower/toilet - as others have said, they've all got doors so what does it matter?
i go camping with my 5 year old grandson and i take him with me into the mens not a problem.but sometimes i take my 8 year old grandaughter and all i do is make sure the campsite has family bathrooms she goes in and gets washed and i wait outside the door job done its not rocket science.

Indeed, this is the sensible option for ladies in a hurry when using the generally woefully inadequate toilets at busy French motorway services.

A few years ago down in Cornwall, my sis and her two kids joined us for a few days. My niece was 9, nephew 6, we took the kids into the ladies at bedtime to clean teeth and walked in to find a middle aged, stark naked woman with one foot in the sink
It was one of those real "awkward" moments. Not because of the nudity, but she had her foot in the sink.
Now that was just plain wrong. We all cleaned our teeth outside the tent.
OH had an experience in a mixed facility in France. He was brushing his teeth at one of the basins, and a well endowed German lady came to the next basin, stripped to the waist, and proceeded to wash herself.
