I'm never sure if these posts are started to spark debate or if there is an ignorance of some sorts to the many different forms and styles of camping....

We are total glampers through and through but that is because we choose to be, there is no keeping up with the Jones' or competition to see who has the best gear and set up, we do it purely because we like the comforts of home whilst we are away.
I would NEVER judge another camper because they had a "cheaper" tent than us and used less gear, cooked outside etc... What would be the point? we are all sharing the same experience of the great outdoors which, surely is why most of us camp anyway???

To the judgemental types out there I am probably the epitome of a tent snob as I have Cabanon AND Outwell tents!
I have finally found the right combination of tents after camping for several years and getting through many a tent, then selling it on and trying the next one. To be honest, I couldn't give a flying fart what anyone thinks, all I know is that my tents aren't going to go anywhere with us in them, they won't leak, look good and are a darn sight more comfortable than other tents we have had in terms of space, height, climate inside the tent etc... etc...

I like to use a 3 way fridge because I like my favourite tipple to be cold and my meat fresh, I prefer to use a kitchen tent so that the wind isn't constantly interfering when i'm cooking and I like to bung a heater on before I got to bed to take the chill off, I have carpets, table cloths, bunting and matching windbreaks but do I think my set-up looks good?...... Of course I do because it's mine NOT because I am a snob!

I think I put my way of camping down to my lifestyle, I work in fashion retail and have done so most of my life and so it is part of my daily routine to put outfits together and style my customers, team and store.... On the side, I like to dabble in a bit of interior design and i'm pretty sure this all plays a part in my penchant for matching camping gear!

So I guess what I am trying to say is, Yes!, I do have a matching dinner set, cooker and kettle for each tent, I do have cushions and sleeping bags that match too and yes!, if something doesn't match, I cover it with something that does, that's just my way of camping, I have absolutely nothing to prove and I certainly don't drive a B.M.W and have money to burn, I work my arse off to pay for these little luxuries and am proud of my set-ups. This is what I WANT camping to be for us and I love it and certainly wouldn't have it any other way

Snobbery does not come in to it for me,I have tried all types of tents from outwell, vango and many others. Comfort and practicality and durability are the aims of my purchases. Buy the right stuff and only buy it once.

I have a Cabanon Aruba family tent (6 berth) with all optional extras, side and front canopy, extra sleeping pod, utility extension. Dependent on how many are coming we choose which accessories we take.

A Cabanon Andorra (4 berth) smaller but takes all the Cabanon accessories we have for the Aruba. It also has a door front and back. A very flexible combination that can be adapted for all our camping needs, all of my stuff is tan and green so they match but I have not paid more than £150.00 for an immaculate hardly used tent. The 2 berth sleeping pod was second hand and brand new in the bag for £55.00. The only thing I got from Cabanon direct was the front sun canopy. Everything else second hand.

I got a Cabanon Elzas for £40.00 off of Ebay with a sun canopy for shorter breaks for just the wife and myself. Spent less on all my Cabanon stuff than we spent buying our big Outwell family tent alone, (now sold on and still going strong.)

Having Cabanon can be a very prudent buy and a lot cheaper than you think, no snobbery just good gear cheaply sourced. Heavy though.

I love looking at all the various tents on sites,I do not judge others but often find people may deem others snobby campers because they are envious of what others have. That's human nature though.

Referring to 'tent snobbery' is rather like a fisherman getting huffy because someone else is proud of a very expensive rod and reel and a smart seat and umbrella setup they've probably saved up for years to buy. Or a birdwatcher disapproving of someone else buying very posh binoculars!

When camping is a hobby, of course we're going to tailor it to suit our needs, and spend money accordingly. If they can afford it, people always treat themselves to nice equipment when their hobby takes on enough priority. And why not?

the epitome of a tent snob? - with an Outwell? - are you serious, just kidding or trying to brighten up our day?

maybe with a cabanon you could be, but an Outwell??? - Outwells are as common on campsites as a hotdog/burger van is at a football ground!

nothing wrong with them being popular - but thats like thinking your the epitome of road users with your vauxhall astra glx model!
and i should know having a trout and a bear lake.

once your the proud and rare owner of a karsten or a DeWaard Then you can be the epitome of camping but not with an outwell! lololol

thanks for brightening up my day - ill never look at my trout or bear in the same way again - ill have to hide them behind a tree - in case someone thinks that i think im an epitome - or something else

And there you go...........

EXACTLY the type of response I expected!

Judgemental, ignorant, offensive, biased and rude!, I wonder why there aren't more people like you on these forums

My Outwell comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek as others had made an opinion about Outwell owners before..... In actual fact I have NEVER seen another Missouri or Yukon River on a campsite so i'm pretty sure they aren't as common as you think!

Believe me when I say, there is a lot more I would like to say to you but I'd rather not get banned from a forum I have been a member of for a number of years, have met some amazing people through and that has been a valuable source of info for me and my camping buddies, Unfortunately there are a lot of members like yourself on here who like to provoke others because they have an a opinion and no one else is allowed one!
I would suggest that you find something else to do with your time, possibly working hard on making friends as I'm pretty sure from your patronising response that you haven't got many and it really doesn't surprise me with that attitude!

I certainly hope I don't meet anyone like you on my travels.....

Good reply 3mad,
...for us it's not a case of keeping up with the Joneses or having to get the latest gear, it's whatever we think we need and if we can afford it, obviously if we can afford a better quality version of something we'll do that, but we've bought plenty of things from ebay, poundshops etc. We started camping with a Gelert Cadiz we bought for £70, got a single gas cooker and a secondhand table, we slept on duvets from home in sleeping bags we'd borrowed, we slowly replaced these things with new versions as and when we could afford it. We now have a very nice set up, but if someone pitched up at the side of us with the kind of set up we had when we started we certainly wouldn't look down on them, in fact we've just given our old Gelert tent to friends who went away with us last weekend to help get them on their way and are now in a similar position to us when we started.
To me it seems like the people who are jealous of what others have are the ones accusing others of camping snobbery.

I DON'T think Outwell owners are snobs! as stated, It has been mentioned before (and on this actual thread) about Outwell owners being snobs or thinking they are better than other campers, That was my whole point!
We quite often play "count the monty 6" and agree that Outwell's are common but surely this just proves that, as a brand, they are doing something right?
I went out of my way to get an Outwell tent/s that WASN'T that common purely because I wanted something diferent...... I don't care where they are made as long as they do what it says on the tin......

No, because if you come across in the flesh as you come across on here, then I really wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut and would certainly let you know MY opinion!
Perhaps if you don't mean to be offensive, you should proof-read your posts before you send them but if you read back and take into account the amount of PMSL smilies, you would realise how patronising your post was........

outwell do lots of things right, nice glossy online brochure with pics of happy families in their tents and everyone is laughing and happy - with their new outwell tent maybe?

they are easily available from lots of camping shops around the country - most folks wouldnt have to travel too far to find a retailer that stocks them, and ebay is packed full of them!

i got both of mine from online retailers and delivery was 2 days for the bear lake and next day for the trout!

plenty of availability coupled with a large range of styles, sizes and budgets means that for anyone wanting an outwell, there is bound to be one that meets or is close to their needs and so theres lots of them about.

the montana tent is almost down to 260.00 now with yeomans/go-outdoors and so im not surprised theres so many around - you dont get many tents of that size with steel poles from a well-known name for that kind of money.

iv just bought a vango omega to put on my bike as its only 5.5kg, has a 5000mm h/h and i got it for 100.00 - big saving on the usual 140-180 price it usually goes for and ill be quite happy using it next to anyone in an outwell or better!

im definitely not a tent snob otherwise id never use my argos lichfield cherokee3, my navaho or my vango alpha300.

only deWaard and Karsten owners are allowed to be tent snobs! - these tents are not only expensive to buy (5000.00 eu for a used karsten on marktplaatz just now!) but you cant just goto your local camping shop or ebay to buy them - you need to goto the continent to see and buy them really to get the best choice and selection.

and these owners arent snobs - theyre just seriously addicted to camping! - i like that!

I can see both sides. We would love a mega expensive tent as i hate being "common" which is why we got the best we could afford at the moment. A maui reef and an indian lake. We like to be different as andy says, i must admit i am really happy with our outwells and researched a lot before we bought them. I love the fact that when we're on a site there is usually noone else with out tent, but at the same time i know they are mass produced. I do feel better about our mass produced tent though than next doors hi gear but at the same time its what you're happy with and what you can afford.

at happycamper, the indian lake is a lovely and very individual & unusual tent and thats a tent you really dont see many of at all. i considered it against a trout lake but i couldnt store my bike in it like i can in my trout lake's extension and still have space to move around it otherwise i would have looked to buy one of those instead.

I love the "Reef" range too Happcampers and looked at getting the Hawaii instead of our YR 6, I like the idea of the vestibule area at the front and the fact the groundsheet detaches and front opens up to make a nice "kitchen" area, love the colour too but was worried as a lot of people mentioned heavy fading, Have you noticed any?

I went for the YR 6 from the 4 as we needed the extra living space AND I tracked down the elusive front extension for the 6.... well chuffed!! :-) it passed the weather test in Dorset with the scorching weather and Cornwall with some high winds and rain too so overall very impressed

Have yet to see a "Reef" on a campsite TBH.....

Lol.

As the owner of incredibly common Icarus 500, I regard every other Icky I see on a site as a reflection of my excellent choice in tent purchasing. After all, if they weren't any good you wouldn't see thousands of the beggars would you?

I think all campers should be applauded for trying the experience, too many people look down their noses at us as if we only go camping because we can't afford anything else. They are the one who are missing out, there are plenty of snobs out their just as in society and if I come across them I tentd to avoid them.

The make of your tent does not matter as Andy says but if people want to be house proud and co-ordinate who are we to criticise them? I personally think the foreign styles bell tents are very pretty but I wouldn't want one as they are not practical for our needs just as our Vango (yes Vango) Amazon 800 is not everyones cup of tea but to us until it ticks all the boxes for a family of six and a dog.

The true snobs are the ones who have crossed to the dark side and bought a caravan and often begin conversations with "we used to camp in a tent but...."
