Oh, no, another 'spat out my wine' moment.

Well, I kind of sit (or sleep) between two camps as the Megamat (have I mentioned these before? ) is a wonderful lovechild. It does the airbed comfy thing, but also the SIM insulation bit too. Before that, I had 'old skool' red n blue rubberised cotton airbeds, which were great (electric pump) but I fancied something well, a bit fancier. Still have them tho' as I can't bear to part with such classics. I slept on one for several months when I broke my leg, it was lovely: duvet top and bottom, like a mother's breast.

I also tried, and then ditched, a cheapo vinyl flocked shocker.

We also have an Aerobed but I never sleep well on that, it feels like I'm at sea, and not in a good way.

So, Megamat for me, with the old red n blues as back up: can I be an associate member of the airbed appreciation club please?

Yesterday I was able to test the Thermarest Mondoking SIM a little bit. I didn’t sleep on it or anything, but I did a minor trial run. In this thread I’ve read several negative comments about the level of comfort of SIMs and until now I would have agreed with those comments. I’ve always preferred an air bed, but then again, I never tried a SIM that’s 10 cm thick and costs a heap of money.

That’s where the difference lies: the Mondoking feels excellent. I bought it for my girlfriend who has a hernia and is currently in a lot of pain (we’ve got an appointment at the hospital tomorrow and it’s very likely that she will undergo surgery within a couple of months). She needs a bed that’s a little bit firm. It can be soft-ish, but it needs to provide support in a good way.

The Mondoking seems to do that. It’s really comfortable –more comfortable than any air bed I’ve tried (which have never been more expensive than £40) - and provides great support (unlike the air beds I’ve tried).

To those who dislike SIMs: I fully get where you’re coming from, but at the same time I wonder whether you’ve tried a really good thick SIM. The Mega Mat gets nothing less than awesome reviews and I’m an instant fan of the Mondoking myself.

The average air bed lasts between 1-4 years with occassional use (http://www.sleeplikethedead.com/mattress-reviews-air-temporary.html-, while the Mega Mat gets a 5 year warranty and will probably last much longer. Add to that the stellar reviews it's received and the notion that some people just require more comfort and support, it's not that ridiculous a price to pay.

But is it expensive? Hell yes!

When our 14 year old Daughter's airbed developed a leak on our Easter break, she spent the night on one of our lounger/ chairs with the extending footrest.

She's a big girl for her age, (5ft 7in) and curvy. She said she preferred sleeping on that to the airbed.

Airbed for me - on my fourth year using my aerobed - love it! Sleep better than I do at home with less aches and pains in the morning.

Me too. :-)

The thing that most interests me is how easy it is to get it down to its published packed size. They reckon 18cm for the XXL, which seems incredible for something 4" thick and over 6' long.

If someone could then assure me that they're thick enough to disguise the presence of the bar down the middle of a double airbed, I could be tempted.

We have the airbeds that are on raised metal frames, it's our first time trying these as we usually have a normal aerobed with pump.

We are looking forward to trying these- the mattress can be removed or replaced if any problems, and we are able to sleep on the frame should the thing pop x

Rolling it up and putting it in the bag is easy. I haven't measured the diameter though and can't do so right now as my gf had been using it for the last couple of days.
