63yrs old here and try to get off at least once a month all through the year either backpacking on the bus or when I can afford it hiring a van...

Younger workmates think I am soft in the head for getting off into the green stuff as often as I can thinking I'm "roughing it" some how....Showed them photos of my last trip....Am now a hero to most of them as they thought I was sitting huddled in a two man tent somewhere...The reality stunned them......LOL!!

Jelboy.

I agree with Opensauce. Its not an age thing. Its fitness and attitude. I am 65, still camping or sleeping in my Berlingo (backseats taken out), wild camping on beaches or in forests. If you are up for it and have the right gear age is no barrier. Being a bit nuts helps as well ;-)

Well, (being the OP in early fifties) - we did manage 4 nights over the easter weekend, during which we firstly discovered that our 'bargain' tent had a 7 inch horizontal tear in the side about 10 " from the ground, our other 'bargain' extension has two tears and no tent pegs. Our tent leaks - all of which we didnt expect taking as gospel that things were in 'excellent condition' - lesson learned there then!!!
We experienced, sunshine, heavy rain, high winds, hail, and even snow, and observed a few dead tents and gazebos by the bins at the site, half way through our stay, and most campers cutting short their stay.
We stuck it out and had some fun and established that we like camping, and we can do it, even in some adversity, and we came back still smiling. However, I will be a bit more picky about the weather forecast for future outings as it is infinitely more fun and pleasurable when it is dry and sunny!!!
Oh and I am avidly now looking at the shiny new air tents around, but reading some of those reviews, it does make me wonder if our leaky, torn Monty 6 may be better.......
