I discovered an excellent book called "Food for Backpackers" by Dave Coustick and it opened up a whole new world to us!  We realised you could do anything on a stove that didn't require an oven (or even a grill!)  This was before I discovered this website of course!

One of the first things we tried was chicken in white wine sauce and since then we've done omlettes, chilli, curry, sweet and sour chicken etc. mostly using fresh ingredients but occasionally cheating my using tins (usually at festivals).  We've even managed a Sunday lunch.

This year we are starting our camping food experiments early by buying some tinned foods to try-out at home and adding our own ingredients as we see fit.

We find the pre-cooked microwavable rice is a godsend as you just need to warm it through with a little oil and cous-cous takes minimal time and water to prepare.  We also try to use sachets as opposed to tinned food wherever possible to keep carrying weight down.

...after all an awning is just a three-sided tent!

What is it about camping that makes me want to eat!!  The smell of bacon and egg sizzling away on the fresh morning air, it seems that as soon as one camper has started cooking it's contagious!! soon enough the whole site seems to be frying away!   Come the evening the barbeques start up, and you smell all of the delicous meat etc cooking, and once again, once one starts, they all do! and it all adds to the experience i think.  One of the things i can remember from when i was little was my Grandad getting up before everyone else, and me waking up on my little airbed to the smell of bacon cooking, wonderful!!

Nowadays when we go camping my Husband and i like to have a nice bit of bacon and egg in the morning some days, then just toast or cereal other days, in the evening we tend to buy fresh meat, like steaks or minted lamb, or pork chops, and sometimes smoked mackeral fillets (wrapped in foil with butter) and bbq these, with a nice salad, we also like to put baked potatos in tin foil in the coals...delicous! We have gone off burgers and sausages, well i have, but my Husband still loves sausages, and burgers more than i do.  I also take fresh fruit away with me, and enjoy that, and of course lots of hot and cold drinks!  I think you have to be a bit careful (well i do!) as i need to lose weight, and as much as i love eating i think you get a bit carried away when you are away, it must be the fresh air!

I agree with every thing you say Mirabelle been camping for 50yr now and still love the smell and taste of cooking outside, allways take my old Meths stove to cook sausages swear they taste better.

You can allways go back on your diet when you get back home just enjoy your camping trip and eat what you want.

Very  nice r1ck06.  We've tried this.  Our star meal last year was a rib of beef cooked on the BBQ - very nice indeed!!

I just take my 'normal' food that I would cook and eat at home excluding anything that has to be cooked in an oven...

Hi

We tend to eat food when we're camping!!! LoL!

We cook simular things to what we eat at home - spag bol, chicken tonight, steak. You can cook most things you cook at home on the hob!
