The bedrooms are actually bigger than they look.  Although you sleep the other way round ( which I normally would not go for ), they are very long ( nearly 3metres ).  You can literally get up and walk round ( no crawling over other people even though you are sleeping across).  I have 3berth pods in my Monty 12 ( had it done by Outwell ), and the 3 berth pods in the Nebraska are far bigger.  The XL pods are 4 berth but there are only 2 of them and are actually shorter.  Looking at it, it seems the XXL are a very comfortable 3 berth whereas the XL 4 berth is the same as the 4 berth on the Monty.  In-fact, if they had made the bedrooms on the XXL about 20cm bigger then they would have been 4 berth pods.  I think the reason they did it like this between the XL and XXL is to keep the size down a bit.  If they had made the XXL the other way round, it would had added over a metre to the depth ( 7.4 metres would have gone to nearly 9 metres ).

The XXL is currently 7metres by 7.4 metres.  The XL is 7.5 metres by 6 metres.

The reason I get some things for free is because I have to deal with salesmen and big contracts everyday, and some salemen give away freebies. Not very often but I get a couple a year. I always choose a tent.

Good analysis Steve - where'd you get the XL measurements?  I've only found XXL dimensions so far.

The thing that struck me about the XXL pods is they have a large floor area, but relatively limited standing height, with both door and rear wall sloping up to a ridge, with no 'full height' ceiling like in the Monty and Nebraska XL.    The side profile on the XXL dimensions I've seen (link) seems to show full height ceilings, but I think this is from the XL which has two roof arches per pod - like the Monty, which I prefer - need to see 'em in the flesh I guess to really judge.

Interestingly, the XXL pod has exactly the same floor area as the Monty 4 man pod (5.04 SqM), just the Monty pod is a bit squarer, and with better ceiling height. (Ok, this is getting a bit obsessive).

The reason the XL has 2 poles per pod is because the bedroom pod is the other way round ( i.e. head goes towards the door ).  So the pod has to be longer.  Whereas the XXL you sleep across the pod, but the pods are so long, you can get up and walk round any people close to the dorr than you.  The XL pods are exactly the same spec as the 4 berth pod on the Monty 12.  Even on my Monty, if I go right to the back of the pod, my head brushes the top of the inner tent.  The XXL standing height goes down to 1.85m at the back then slopes down like most.  I am not too worried about right at the back because there will only ever be 2 people in the pod.  I will post the floor plan for the XL very shortly.  I had it emailed to me.  I just need to upload it to the internet somewhere so I can display it here.

The only reason I went for the XXL rather than the XL is for the extra bedroom.  Usually I need 4 pods, but because the porch is so big it solves a lot of my problems.  The porches on the XL and XXL are indentical as is the living space.

The pods on the XXL are in-fact the same as the Monty.  The reason it looks slightly different is the main tent is 20cm higher in the centre so it looks as though the bedrooms are lower.  Theya re in-fact a little higher than the Monty at the front ( Monty is 2.05m XXL is 2.10m going down to 1.95m ).  I am 1.89m tall so its fine for me .

Hi Concorde

Just saw your note but my dealer here has said that since the initial details came out the Nebraska XXL has been improved - there is an extra external pole for the rear bedroom giving it stand up height and, from the sounds of it, making it huge! No changes to the side bedrooms though - the porch also has some of those opening windows in like the ones on my Sun Valley and also on the Montana's.

This XXL sounds perfect for my family - loads of space for me and the wife, then a great bedroom for each of the kids! - Perhaps I'll be looking for a good price later in the season.

Not sure I agree - if you look carefully at the XXL pictures (link), you can see that the pod door and rear wall meet in a ridge under the single pod roof pole - so from the side, the pod is triangular - no flat ceiling.  I know the accompanying side view diagram shows ceiling height going from 2.1 to 1.95m, but it also shows two roof poles per pod, which the XXL does not have, but the XL does (link) - so I think it's the wrong diagram for the XXL.

If mdj_uk is right, then the rear pod might now be like the XL/Monty - in which case I'm a lot more interested ! We can have the big pod and the kids can have the slopey ceilings!   I know all this is starting to sound a bit anal, but I really want walk-around ceiling height, which is why I've not considered a Hartford etc.

I think the diagram is a bit mis-leading.  The  inner pole the diagram is showing is actually the pole that goes across.  Its the way they have drawn it I think ( or they have modified the XL one ) . If you look at the actual picture, the bedroom pod actually starts where the pole goes across diagonaly the living area so there is quite a bit of flat ( right where the porch is joined ). The porch is effectively the width of the living area. Everything else is bedroom. I can see where you are coming from though.  From the conversation I had with OASE, I was assured that you can easily fully stand up in the bedroom pods unless you are over 6foot 6inches or right at the back.  It is definitiely nothing like a Hartford.  I had the 2004 Hartford XXL and couldn't really stand up anywhere in the bedroom pod apart from if I was standing at the door entrance and even then my head touched the fabric.

In height terms, the XL and XXL are suppsoed to be the same.  It is just the size of the pod that is different in respect to floor space and orientation.  The living area and porch are apparantly identical.

I would have preferred all 3 pods to be like the XL, but this would have made the XXL very long going backwards ( about 9 metres ).  So Iguess that is why they turned the bedroom pods around.

We are very happy with our colorado 5. Fits the 3 of us and stuff (everything including kitchen sink!) in nicely.

Back to the Nebraska pod debate !

I emailed Mark Jennings at Oase - he replied very quickly with the following, which hopefully clears things up !!   (great customer service by the way ! ).

The original bedrooms (as in the drawing etc) are similar in style to the Hartford tents that we sell but larger (height and depth etc) - this means that the early reaction from retailers has gone more to the XL so there will be more limited stock on the XXL throughout the season (buy early!) I have looked through the topic you have mentioned and although we have told very few people about the XXL - Yes it is basically correct. There is an additional pole at the rear making the back bedroom much bigger by volume - similar to the XL style, but only on the one bedroom! (This does add a bit to the overall weight though!). The XL bedrooms have also changed slightly to include the new universal inners so that each side can be split into 2+2 - great for the kids as well as a large open 4 berth.
mdj_uk - you got it right on the rear pod!

Since Outwell are looking at this thread, there is one thing I would like to say.  The ideal change I would have liked to have seen made this year would have been to build on the Monty.  I personaly would have liked to have seen the exact same spec as the Monty I have, but with a porch like the Nebraksa on the front.

I have pruchased the XXL and am more than happy with what I have seen and heard ( proper judgement will be when it arrives ).

The Montana 12 2006 now has a very small porch which really serves no purpose at all.  But I think if a big porch had been added to the Monty with no other changes ( in size etc ).  It would have been my perfect tent.

The bit at the back actually swings against my likings for it now.  Not because of what it does, I wish all the pods could be like that.  But if another pole has been added then it must make the tent stretch longer at the back changing the overall size.  The size of it was about the maximum size I was prepared to have.  I would imagine that if they have added another pole at the back, it must be at least another half a metre longer making it over 8metres.  Difficult for some camp sites.  And as Mark said, the weight has gone up.  This is something the dealer never told me nor anyone else I spoke to. Well I guess I wait until it arrives before I make judement, else it will be going back.

tell you what i would like to see is sides on the front of the montys porch, what are removeable so you can have all open or part depending on wind direction, as it is using windbreaks is not the same as there still a large gap so the wind or rain comes in, as we use it for cooking and eatting under.
yes we do have a daytent and a utillity tent too, but having all 3 up covers 2 pitches.

Langleys/Steve,  Just seen a new floor plan (link) - shows the new rear pod on the Nebraska XXL to be a 4 man pod - a huge 280x245.  Overall length just under 8m - it's now a 10 man tent.

Yep, I saw that last night.  Its one of those tents that I feel I am taking a risk with.  I was trying to keep the tent to around 7m in each direction so although I really do like the back bit, it may be out of my size range now.  A lot of the campsites that I have chosen this year have told me their pitches are around 25-28foot.  The original spec would have just have gone on but the new one will be just over so I may have to cancel.  I just wish the XL was the same layout as the Monty 12.  The Monty 12 layout was absolutely perfect for me, I just missed the porch.  It may well be that I stick with the Monty 12 and Daytent as I have now.  The porch grabbed me as it would have all been in one unit.

I am in 2 minds now as I love my Monty and I just have the feeling I will be disappointed with this.  I quite like the XL, but being 2 x 4 berths ( with divider ) will be a bit small for everything I need it for, especially if we take a visitor as we normally do.  If they had been a 6 berth with divider then it would have been great.  The kids just about fit in a 4 berth now with their luggage and bits so trying to fit them in 2 x 2 berths and then me and OH having a 2 berth and the visitor having a 2 berth would be impossible.  We like the tent tidy as well.

I might end up sticking with the Monty.  I might see if I can change the order for the new Monty 12 instead, although the porch on that ( basically 1m x 1m ) would be absolutely useless.
