That question could be asked for mainy a fear.  Spiders are another thing.  I personaly am not frightened of them ( I dont like them ), but I am terrified of heights.  I have never had a reason to be terrified of heights but for some reason I am.  Wasps and Bees is a very common one, whenever I am out, I see loads of people flapping there arms around and running when one comes near.  My wife has been stung a few times and although not highly allergic, it does affect her somewhat.  She isn't so bad outside when there is room to move, but in an enclosed space she is terrified of them.  Most people have something that gets to them, even if they havn't found it yet.

I wouldn't say wasp stings are painless, but certainly not unbareable pain.  But then again, things like snakes and spiders dont worry her that much.  Its more of the annoyance factor that I don't like for insects.

If there are lots of wasps around we build an old fashioned wasp trap with an inch of jam or honey in a jamjar with a hole in the lid.  You'd be amazed how many you catch!

Theres an article on the web about home made wasp traps ( have a search for a thing called Wasp Bane ).  Apparantly it makes the situation worse.  For a trap to work, it has to kill 100% of all the wasps that investigate it.  If one escapes, then it goes back and tells all its mates, so they all come around as well.  Whether its true or not, I don't have a clue.
