When buying the smaller essential such as cutlery, can openers etc try and start collecting them, by adding one or two bits per week to your weekly shopping list, that way you won't end up spending a small fortune in one hit. You probably won't notice the odd few pounds extra on your weekly shopping bill, but come to buy it all at once and you will notice. As it is inevitable that you will manage to loose a teaspoon at the washing up sinks - no matter how careful you are, don't take grannies heirloom silver - something like Tesco's basic is fine. What's more you want get too upset when you loose a bit. Not only have I lost bits, but also gain things that I am perfectly sure wern't in the sink when I was washing up.
I find that by having stuff just for camping - and keeping it in separate boxes (complete with check lists) I'm not likely to end up on site and find that I have forgotten the cutlery or something.
