So long as it's a good one Kazzie it doesn't need to be thick,but you are right about airbeds.
I've tried them all and while the coleman and aerobeds are comfy indoors the amount of extra insulating that needs doing while camping to stay worm is ridiculous also couple that with the sheer unreliability of the things.
I've got a thermarest basecamp, it's only 5cm thick but you would never guess by the way it feels. It's impossible to feel the ground and lovely and warm. I have lower back problems too, arthritis caused by disc damage years ago so I know exactly what you mean.
