I've just returned from a pleasant week at a campsite in Croston, Lancashire , where we encountered some rather unpleasant neighbours.  Upon setting up their "Argos Special" they then decided to start up the 4x4 to power the extremely large stereo, whilst going about lighting a campfire that put a lot of the Nov 5th ones to shame! This , I could try to ignore , whilst tutting in my tent , but the final straw came when the allowed their 3 children , whom appeared to be in the 10 - 14 age bracket , to drive the 4x4 around the field , at 30-40 mph.

After 8 passes of the 4x4 between my tent and the playpark , where my children were known to walk between quite frequently, OH asked them to please stop.  Instead of an apology , profanaties were directed towards us , and still the rallying continued.    A call to the warden , brought him to the field , and he told them they had to leave the very next morning.  The loud music and driving did cease then , but I must admit I was a little concerned for the safety of my tent, vehicle and equipment until they got up and left in the morning , cheerily giving us the "V" signals on thier way out past our tent.

Skembob I don't understand why they had to leave the next morning ; why not immediately ?

I take it you didn't get much of a good night's sleep knowing they were next to you ? Surely some sort of a refund should have been offered ?

I am so glad to have found this thread! We camped in Yorkshire earlier in the week and had to endure a lot of late night noise on a supposed family-friendly site and it really spoilt our holiday. It seems the culture there was you turned your music ON at 10pm and the best form of entertainment was men's farting competitions. I was beginning to wonder if myself and my DH were just killjoys but it seems not, so thankyou all for reassuring me that I'm quite within my rights to want peace and quiet late at night with a 7 year old in the tent!

I wonder if the Moderators/Admin could run a Poll that would indicate how many folks have had camps with anti-social problems -vs- those who have not.

I'm quite off-put on camping by these stories.

I will keep to the smaller, out of the way, camps to try and avoid the problems

It's quite sad.

unfortunately black adder - the site we encountered problems WAS on a small out of the way site !!  We deliberately avoid commercial sites for this reason.  To be fair this is the first time we have endured such uncouthness !....we've camped about 15 times or so and this experience was by far the worst.  I would add that although this family were thankfully replaced by an old couple in a shiny new caravan who were very quiet....we did still have to listen to Eastenders on their telly !!...

As a good start I think I would add to my list campsites that do not allow televisions !...although its not a rule I have ever seen unfortunately.  For the life of me I cannot understand why on earth anyone would want to sit in a tent, all zipped up, watching eastenders ( God lets end it all now !! ).....when they could be sat outside watching the most glorious sunset over the sea...nowt funnier than folk !

We found that when we've been on sites where loads of people have tvs we can always use the showers and washing up facilities when the likes of Coronation Street and Eastenders are on !

I couldn't figure out where everyone was at first as the site was deserted , then the penny dropped !

I was wondering if I was in a minority here! I thought one of the main points of camping was the outdoors life, a chance to spend quality family time together. Granted rubbish weather restricts activitites some what but there are still plenty of things to do together.

I have just had EHU for the first time and had the luxury of my hairdryer (oops noise!) and cold wine and beer from the fridge but I cant think for the life of me why I would get a DVD/TV to play in a tent? Maybe I am old fashioned? (By the way am on the right side of 40 so not that old!)

Or another idea, before picking a site, post on here for any highly recommended sites. I cannot recommend highly enough the Lone Wolf campsite at Aberdulais, but it may be other peoples idea of camping hell, we thought we'd got it right at Westermill (and it is a nice site) but it was too big to ensure some anti-social spoilsports didn't ruin one night.  Like all life though, unless you buy an island, it is hard to choose your neighbours!

Too true! One of the rudest, loudest, most offensive people I know is also one of the richest and poshest. You only have to look at the behaviour of Hooray Henrys or city traders to know that money and breeding have little to do with manners or consideration for others.

To be honest, when you've been camping regularly for 35 years like I have, it's to be expected really - if you'd been doing anything that regularly for that long, you'd be likely to have met a few bad apples.

I take my laptop with a Freeview dongle connected to it. Its used when the weather is too bad to go out of the tent. Its also used to watch the news and whatever the hell else I want to. I dont have the volume up loud, the reason i know this is that When I set it up, i purposely make sure it cannot be heard outwith around 4 feet of the tent perimeter and if used at night we use headphones or pillow speakers (which cannot be heard unless lying down on the pillow). If someone is camping 4 feet or less from me, then they shouldnt be there = fire hazard. Yes people do go over the top, and yes there are some really antisocial people out there. I lived next door to a family for 2 years who made our family life total hell to the point of persecution! Infact im in court for knocking down the husband of the family because he chose to run out onto the road to attack me and my 2 year old daughter whilst I was driving up the road. Im the one being punished!! Anyway back to the point. If there is a family from hell next to you in thier unit. GO to the management of the site and report it. I've never had any major problems apart from at a very well known and respected campsite in the borders of Scotland, and the manager dealt with the problem right away.

We have just returned from a wonderful long weekend at Wareham Forest and for the first time this year (11 different camping trips) we had no amplified noise, no swearing teenagers, no almost tangible fear of yobbery. It was bliss.

Now, and I appreciate that I will get some stick for this next bit, we also saw no adults wearing football shirts, very few dogs and the ones we did see were all on leashes, no drunks and only two cigarette smokers. Cars were driven at the correct speed and car stereos were turned off, not a single tent had a television set (or an aerial that we could see) and it was a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

Would it be called "Council Housing Wireless" these days to keep it PC?
