But sometimes what one person enjoys (eg tv, music) can ruin another camper's experience.

The same philosophy can be applied to noisy people, children, dogs, barbecues and various other things, but we don't say that they should not be on a campsite.

I`ve had more nuisance caused by other people`s dogs wandering onto my pitch and piddling on my gear, unsupervised children making a mess in the toilets and showers while parents `chat` outside their tents (one campsite had clumps of wet toilet paper stuck to the ceiling every morning), cars being driven onsite in the early hours of the morning `cos people won`t walk to the loos in the rain/dark etc, than I have ever been caused by people watching TV`s.

We tend to take the laptop for an evening film.  Just store a few movies into Media Centre and you then have a choice.  The laptop is also handy for storing your music (nice drop of Jack Johnson when camping) which is then streamed wirelessly to my portable radio which sounds much better than laptop speakers, and you can then keep the radio close and the sound lower so as not to disturb your neighbours.

Mind you, we could have done with a dirty great amplifier the last time we camped.  There was a guy over the way in a trailer tent, and all he did from the day they arrived was shout at his kids LOUD!!

My Doris decided enough was enough, went over and had a word Sunday morning.  Great onsite entertainment!!

Anyway, anyone thought of taking a surround sound system with them?

Well he had been screaming at his kids for well over half an hour and we couldn't hear ourselves think. The whole site were looking in his direction and it was only 8.50 on a Sunday morning by the time I went and had a word.

Anyway back to he main topic. As Chunks says we do take the laptop but only use it for DVDs when the weather is bad or in the evening occasionally. I am always very concious about the sound carrying too so we are careful not only with the sound but also to ensure the film isn't on till too late at night.

I have to take our TV. What would I do if i missed an episode of Coro on a Friday night double? It's real you know. Wish I could get time off to go to Liam's funeral.

I don't want us to take the TV but, I'm going to be outvoted I think. When we've gone without it in the caravan, we've spent time talking together & playing games. I even found myself reading a book. First time I've ever done that!!

I must say guys n girls,

I like my gadgets, as most guys do, but hey!!  When it comes to camping, it's supposed to be laid back and quiet.  So one thing I do check out is how much noise I'm making compared to everyone else by taking a shufty around and listen to my pitch.

At the end of the day, respecting that everyone else is here for the same reason, peace and relaxation, the last thing you want is a bunch of herberts camped next to or near you making a din.  And I believe, in the majority of cases, everyone else does exactly the same, respecting that we're all here for our mini holidays.

take a laptop with us for DVD's and on some pitches with wifi. When watching a DVD I turn it on then walk round the tent to check for noise pollution.I am usually so laid back my wife checks for a pulse.

Each to their own, as long as you dont disturb anyone.

I like having the TV for the weather,or if I choose to watch a programme.

I do read more when we are away, but I kinda object to moralistic tones of "camping is not camping" if you have a TV ?

I love camping and have joined here because of that.

I don't care what things others take with them. As long as I have a good time that's all that matters.

Not bothered what others do - personally I like the idea of getting away from all things electronic (apart from a teensy fan heater & a bit of light this time of year)

To my mind, if somebody wants to watch TV when they are camping, then it is their choice, and provided that the rest of the site can not hear what they are watching, it is nobody else's business.
Next week, we will be taking our portable DVD player, and may or may not use it - we take things as they come.
My kids will be taking their DSs with them - not only are they great for keeping them quiet on the journey - they are useful for the times when I want them by the tent, yet for what ever, can't have them colouring etc - possible because a meal is being prepared and I am using the table.  They will not entire holiday playing on them - but if allowing them some time on them helps me, then I am happy to take them.
In the past, when they were too young to go to the play area on their own, putting a DVD on, while I got some packing done, was a real boon.   They were happy, I got what I needed to do done - meant that I was then free to do nice stuff with the them.

The OH and I wouldn't take a TV camping (our tent has previously been too small and we've only just upgraded to EHU) and she likes hammering me at Rummy too much! Now our girls are a little older we've recently got them a DVD player for the car to keep them occupied during longer journeys and I would imagine we would let them watch a film to give them some chill out time/keep them occupied when there's jobs to be done next time we're away.
