I have to agree with Jelboy, I go camping with the tent and essentials that I require, if someone wants to use a small tent or a large motorhome, thats their choice, and if they disagree with what I'm using, well sorry but thats tough, it's my choice not theirs. I don't really care to be honest with you. As long as I'm comfortable and happy with my set up everyone else can do what they please.

We are lucky to be surrounded by some of the finest countryside and landscapes of any country and how we choose to enjoy, explore, but to also to respect it, surely is the most important point.

Me too. I think one of the reasons that we've seen prices rise above inflation over the time I've been camping (36 years this year) is that sites feel obliged to put in more in the way of facilities to capture the glamping market and have to recoup that investment.

As long as there are clean bogs and showers, and a sink with hot water for washing up, I'm happy. I love sites with no EHU as it means I don't get disturbed by anyone else's telly or games console, but they are getting harder to find. I avoid anywhere with a pool, play area or bar like the plague.

Due to a unfortunate medical condition I get incredibly annoyed by the massed humming of small fridges so unfortunately I am unable to use any but the most basic sites.

Luckily advances in technology over the last couple of decades means I am now able to record programmes from the TV so I am able to cope with a few days away.

As I was able to hear the low hum they broadcast on the Today programme this morning, I wonder if perhaps I'm unusually sensitive to noise! This is what some people don't seem to get - that opting not to use electrical equipment doesn't disturb anyone, opting to use it often does. I don't want to hear tv when I'm camping, or even the pinging of a microwave. Natural noises only for me, please, save for traffic movements that are unavoidable (although I daresay if I was 30 years younger, I'd be backpacking).

I've really enjoyed reading this thread... Although at times it has wound me up... Jelboy summed it up perfectly for me...

I would class myself as a glamper... Doesn't mean I like the all singing and dancing sites... Although my tick box for a site is probably way beyond a basic campers choice... So long as I can have EHU, preferably a play area for my little girl (tis her holiday too) and clean toilet/shower facilities, then I know I've got a good chance that the family Lard will be happy... However, I can totally appreciate, as an ex-cub and scout the enjoyment of basic camping. It's just not for my family.

Our tent is comfy. Luxurious even. That's my choice. It doesn't mean however, I'm not returning to nature. My OH and I just want to be comfty on our breaks. We work hard, and would prefer to relax in comfort. As far as returning to nature, there is nothing better than sitting out of an evening with a glass of wine, saying hello to all that pass my tent, watching the stars. Just I take a (comfty) chair to do it on. And when I get too cold, such is our British weather, I can retire into the tent and use the fan heater to warm through... Does this mean I'm not camping? Surely I am, just my way.

One of my glamping gadgets - an eco-bin to help with the recycling.

Reading through the thread, I got the feeling that some of the basic campers assume that most glampers would prefer to stop on sites with uniform pitches, lock themselves in their tent to watch tv all night - isn't that the job of the tin-tent brigade? - and get their trousers, shoes and best shoes on to hit the site bar for the evening... Just because we have EHU doesn't mean we bring the TV or Xbox - I could think of nothing worse! We do have an ipod dock thingy so I can listen to some tunes - quietly - the volume never loud enough to hear away from our pitch - and certainly never played at all at unsociable hours.

Each to their own. I'm much rather spend time pitched next to either a fellow glamper or a "back to basics" than stuck in an episode of Benidorm.

To conclude my two-penneth, I'm with Val, Woofers and Jelboy on this one.
