OK as I am trying to catch up on some stuff tonight I thought I may as well do this last post before I turn in (too many other things to catch up on in the day)
I am sure you are wondering what has been happening with my tent over the last week - well not much to report I’m afraid, as I have had a mishap and then a virus. Mishap being: I had cut all my pieces, but I needed to wait for the persistent rain to stop, so I could get out in the garden and do some measuring up for window sizes (said before that I needed to do this by eye). Anyway, as soon as we had a couple of dry days (needed 2 as the garden needed to drain!) I went out with my sample side panel and pinned it on. After pinning it on and standing and looking for a while, I decided a cuppa was in order – went in to make one, and low and behold, the local tom cat on it’s daily visit decided that the new object needed claiming! Now I like cats.....have one of my own, but that tom cat has been a pain in the **** for ages.....sprays on anything that doesn’t move! I let the dog out to chase it off.....but I was too late.....the canvas was well and truly claimed.....it stunk.....grrrrrrr! It is now screwed up on the patio waiting for the whiff to ease off. Think I shall let the dog sit and guard it in future – to be honest he was only in the house in the first place because I didn’t want him lifting his leg….oh the irony in that!
Anyway, the next problem was that I was laid low by a nasty virus, which gave me a cracking headache for 3 days followed by sinus problems and sickness – but I was not idle! Oh no – I may have not been able to sew, watch TV, use the laptop, read, or do anything that needed concentrated focus, but I couldn’t do nothing (I am a crap patient…..have no patience see) so I decided to have a go at converting a storm lamp into an electric lamp. I had been meaning to do this for a while, and as I could lie on the sofa to do it, it seemed like the perfect pass time. I have had these lamps for years and they are all nice and rusty in places (just how I like them as it adds to my Colonial scheme) I also had a fitting from a lamp similar to THIS that I had kept as I thought would come in useful (keep everything actually, drives hubby mad). To convert the lamp I just cut out the bottom and the wick holder; then took enough off the bottom glass rest to allow a small light fixture to fit through. The lamps are made from a thin copper type material so they were easy to cut with some tin cutters - you could probably cut it with something else though (I used the pliers to remove some of it by brute force). I made good any sharp edges by bending them over, but I did add some duct tape along the bottom edge so there was no chance of it scratching a surface. Must say it was a bit fiddly, and I did get a few nicks, but I was pleased with the result, but I’m sure I will make a better job of the next one when I get the chance to do it (everything is a learning curve) Anyway, here are a couple of pics of my effort...........
It gives off quite a good light, but it will be better with two.
So there you are - anyone fancy having a go? Or if you have already had a go at something similiar, let us see some pics please (love the pics we do)
Tracey
PS: Just noticed on the pics that I still haven't taken all of the sticker off the front of the lamp....sloppy eh!
PPS: Just thought I had better be all safe before I get berated and say I am not encouraging anyone to mess with electrics unless they know what they are doing blah blah blah..... I have an electrical engineer for a neighbour, so he has taught me a few things!

Lol Floggitt - I have just looked at your post on my welder thread..........I have really upset you haven't I? Awww, don't be sad Floggs, I didn't know you were a welding pro.......should have, as you seem to know about most things
As for my tent making project.......now you are being naughty as you know full well that I have been making lots of stuff whilst I waited for some decent weather so I could get out side without getting everything covered in mud. Yes I have bought loads of poles, and I have got my self a couple of lovely tents as well, but I won't be getting the welder till Monday. There is also the slight problem of not actually being able to get to my sewing machine at the moment, due to the fact that the conservatory is full of tents and equipment that I am under strict orders to get rid of! I must admit that I have gone a bit mad lately on the tent buying front, the result being that we are over run with the things. I really need to get rid of some, so I promised hubby that as soon as we have the nice weather I would pitch them and get them up for sale: only problem with that plan is that I have only found the time to pitch my new tents (you know…..the ones I am keeping quite about) I do have some nice poles though, and as soon as I get my welder (and get accustomed to it) I can get started on making my utility (didn’t like the set up I had) Anyway, it’s not fair for you to have a go, as you know I have 2 children to look after 24/7, so I am restricted to weekends as it is - add to that all the other stuff I have to do, and it makes for a very small window of opportunity for me to do the stuff I want. I could post all the things that I am doing, but I am not one for thinking about pics all the time (just get on with it), but you will see what I have done when it all comes together. In the meantime: If you have any advice about the welder, then drop me an email.
Tracey
PS: I have to fit some blooming camping in somewhere.........too damn hot for me at the mo as well!

You make me sound like a know it all! You cant work on a farm and not be able to cut and weld.
I know you have a lot to keep you busy, as you say yourself you were waiting for nice weather so you could work outside, just wondered if you had taken advantage of this lovely sunshine.
I will post in your welders thread

Nooo not at all Floggy – it was a genuine acknowledgement of your many skills!
Anyway, just for you Floggs, here is where I am upto at the moment:
I didn’t like the pole set I had for the utility, as it had a sloping roof, and thanks to my son's mate - who decided to swing from it whilst running down the garden – it now has a few bent poles
A few weeks ago I bought a couple of Cabanon utility tents from Preloved. They are straight sided with a pitch roof, which is great, but unfortunately, they are the wrong size as they are 3m x 4m, which is too big for a utility tent, and too small for my big tent. I have a plan to extend one of them too 5m x 6m (using the other set of poles) so I can use it too make the high wall tent that I want (hence the need for a welder) Only problem with this set up is that I won’t have enough poles left over to make my utility
I have been thinking that I could make a utility based around a patrol tent set up: It will be easy to put up/take down, and I have loads of ridge tent poles I could use. Only problem at the mo (as mentioned above) is finding free time to do it. I’m hoping that I can make a start next weekend. It’s an extra bank holiday, and as I have decided to skip camping (will be too busy for my liking) I can take advantage of hubby being home to entertain the kids. I also have the luxury of having (as yet) no plans thrust upon me, so it’s looking like I will have a free run for a change (hope the weather holds)
I will post some pics as soon as I have something to post, but in the meantime be patient Mr Floggs – this was never going to be a ‘bang it up’ job – has to be done properly, and that takes time!
