Also I would like to make it CLEAR that you CANNOT repeat CANNOT smell CO (Carbon Monoxide) that funny smell when burning gas is food residue or airborne particles buring,

Do not think you can detect CO as you have a "sensitve" nose, this is another silly fable.

Get a CO dector (about a tenner) please its really cheap and they work..

I don't cook in the main tent for all the reasons stated above but this thread has made me think about one thing.
We have a 3 way fridge and I will be using it tomorrow when we camp in Symonds Yat. There is no electricity so we will be using it on gas.
Obviously you can't leave the fridge outside and it won't be in the tent we sleep in but it will be in the porch. I will be paying great attention to where I put it and the ventilation in the porch but I might take the CO detector with me for the main tent.
If it hadn't been for this thread I'd have never even considered thinking about CO

i didnt know you could get gas fridges! ... do they make the poisonous fumes too? ( how does a gas fridge work ??? - i thought gas made heat, not cold? )

so if you have a gas fridge, do you have to turn it off before going to sleep too? ( wont everything be warm by the morning then ? )

this is all new to me. iv just bought another led lantern, 24 leds, takes 3 D batteries and has a dimmer switch for £9.95 at the petrol station. was going to buy a gas lantern now - but am frightened of using a gas anything inside the tent after reading all this on here.

iv bought a tent extension, so the main tent door can be closed, we'll cook in the extension from now on with the extension door open so gas cant go into the tent.

so glad i read all this in here.

Is co always present when using gas appliances or is it when the appliance is faulty?

If you burn any fossil fuel without an adequate source of O2 (air through ventilation) it will produce CO. It only occurs in a closed system where there is not enough O2 present for the carbon to bond to. Burning gas with a plentyful supply of air will not produce any CO just CO2.

oh and it does not necessarily mean the appliance is faulty, even an appliance in full working order will produce CO if there is not enough O2 present.

Dbice

Couldn't tell you how the gas fridge works, I just know it does
I will be leaving it on all night but it will be in an annex and I will make sure I lift the edge of the tent to get good ventilation.

As for the gas lanterns. We generally use it outside the tent but we have used it inside but not for too long and we always make sure it is out before we go to bed. Our tent is quite large and well ventilated.

I will be taking the CO monitor with me and I will report back what effect running the fridge in the annex has.

Yes gas fridges are an excellent purchase. I have one and if I use it on gas (as it works on electricity too) I have a utility tent where I put the fridge. But as long as there is a constant change of air then you wont have any CO problems.

This is in very simple terms.

A gas fridge is called and absorption fridge  it works by heating up ammonia which changes into gas (this is where the cold comes from as the ammonia evaporating produces cold), the gas then cools down, the gas then cools back into a liquid and the whole process starts again.

A normal household fridge works in the same way, except it is much more efficent and can cool to MUCH lower temps far more easier.

Typicall absorption fridges cool between 20c to 30c below ambient temp. These fridges are a excellent purchase especially if you have no electricity, my fridge has been used for many years now and always performs as it did when new, it can even make ice cubes!

You'll be fine as long as there is enough fresh you could get a utility tent and put the fridge in there, this is what I do and its really handy.
