surely if your only protection from the elliments is nylon canvas or somthing in between your camping . what you then put in that shelter is up to you . i dont care what people have in there houses but then again most people dont end up with the contence of there house on display in a field . So exspect others to be curios and have an opinion on what they see .

Living in Scotland if I didn't camp in the rain, I wouldn't camp. Unfortunately can't be away every day camping. Have now been home a week and have to wait till Monday evening to camp again.

As for what people take with them, I couldn't give a monkey's what others take with them. I do things my way, whether I'm backpacking with all my stuff in a 60l rucksack or having a family camp with a bootful of stuff.
Backpacking forum is so quiet as there are better backpacking forums out there with many more posters for answers and banter regarding backpacking. I've always felt this is a more large tent camping forum

I used to camp with the very basics, small tent, digging a fire pit, setting snares for rabbits, burying my poo, washing in the river etc. It was all going well until the Haven site warden came along.

Don't worry Tracey (see I spelt it right )....

We might be a part of the "take the kitchen sink brigade" but it beats being a part of the "opinionated, one sided, sarcastic. biased, ignorant, offensive, jumped up because other's have a point brigade"

Calm down dear indeed!!, how patronising is that??

That's why I generally don't respond to these kind of posts as some look at it as an opportunity to be-little others...... Clear case here

Well, we (Just the two of us) have only just started, (first trip last weekend), and whilst we are going to try and do without EHU, we do already have a "wardrobe" and a pi** bucket! We have comfy beds, and carpets. Five man tent, with extension & Windbreak. 3 position campy chairs with integrated foot rests. A larder cupboard full of tinned stuff, and a standard cool box for a few beers, a but of milk, and a tub of butter. We bought a table to sit and eat at, but it ended up being loaded up with kitchen stuff, so I'm off shopping tomorrow for another "dining table". We've decided to keep the concertina cooking thing, and cooker outside, so a tarp has been ordered, and will be used from now on, to cover the "kitchen area", and also the "dining table", if the weather ain't great.
The water proof playing cards have been ordered, as I wouldn't know where to start with the bark and stick method! and as well as scrutinising everyone's pics on here, we are more than happy to have a nosey at our neighbours, to see if there's anything else we "need".

We live in a council house, on a sh*tty estate, surrounded by overgrown hedges, unkempt gardens full of car parts and pit-bull s*it! Our estate has blue bins for plastic waste, brown bins for cardboard, and red bins for threatening letters and rent arrears summons'!!!

If our camping style means we have to reclassify ourselves as "holidaying in a tent", I can live with that. In fact, I think that is much more accurate, and suits us perfectly. We fully appreciate we are not camping in the true sense, but it is our interpretation of camping, and we intend to enjoy it.

Oh, and by the way, has anyone tried these?......   How good do they look?!!

Muckers, don't worry; you will get to know everyone on here.   Their likes and dislikes, even though you may or may not meet anyone.  Alot on here go on meets.

Andy doesn't normally respond to certain types of posts, but did do in defence of Tracey.

There are a lot of campers here, who do like to be comfortable when it comes to camping,( they just choose not to respond).   It depends on how long they are going.  To be honest, why not.

Many have families, with young children.  Health and Safety is their top priority, hence EHU. Not forgetting medical needs.  That is why fan heaters is adviced, instead of gas fire. Even in the summer, like at the moment, it isn't that hot.

And a utility tent, to cook in, imagine the scenario of youngsters and a dog around a hot stove.    And many winter camp.   Many people will not cook inside their main tents, for safety reasons.

I have a carpet instead of picnic rugs now.  It's not a luxury, it is added protection for the SIG, as well as being comfortable underfoot.

Some people like SIGS, I know others who don't, as they prefer the grass underfoot.

Everyone camps their way, because it suits them.  No one is right or wrong.  Camping is camping, regardless.

Some people complicate the issue, when there isn't one.

You camp how you want to camp.

Not much to comment on here.

If forum members can't understand each other's very different styles of camping, that lack of understanding is definitely not to their credit, IMHO.

Oh dear, so much for irony - I rest my case.

Tracey, apologies for misspelling your name, that was not intentional.

Grief, bit taken aback at all this judgemental stuff!! Camping for me is a hobby. It's also a cheap second holiday abroad with the kids and dog.

I never travel light, wherever/however I travel, just ask my hubby, so for me camping light is never going to happen but then it only affects me cos its me that packs everything, its me that unpacks everything when we get there, me and dd put the tent up. No, I'm not a martyr either its just its MY hobby and I want to camp, the family came with me to passify my wanting to go all the time. They needed the extra comforts to make it bearable for them and I am happy to supply those comforts.

My thoughts are, take what you like to help you enjoy your holiday.

Just wondering if I'm not the only one who think some people are over complicating there camping . Unless you just love building flat pack and playing house . Don't get me wrong I love my comforts but there's got to be a balance surely . Especailly with the fowel weather weve been having .

I know what you are saying. I think people are missing the point with the weather. It's no fun to be rained out, however, it's the working with nature bit that takes one out of the chemical cities. I'm afraid I've grown to like the modern comforts that bricks and mortar have given us, but isn't it great to stick your fingers up to it all, even for a weekend? If it's mod cons you want on holiday, then stay in a hotel.
