Hi Rachael - Thomas's communication is estimated at only somewhere between 12 and 24 months but his self help skills and gross motor at above age 7 (he's just 11) so whilst we are a long way off him being able to write about where he's been he is very visual so I do keep a photo album. I think I should start a special camping folder though. Although as soon as he saw the tent bag going in the boot last time he was ecstatic!! I could then tie it in with a visual schedule - we are working on what's happening today/tomorrow. Hopefully then he might show a preference for differnt sites

it would also help with the professionals as well. we found that taking his folder into school they were able to tailor his schooling around him and what he has done and seen rather than giving him the normal curriculum and watching him struggle so now in photos they do graphs on how many tents there were and colours, how many birds or animals and what types etc and it has really helped although he is still at a P1 level and due to go to seniors in august so from 6 lessons a week to 30 gulp lol

A balanced life is a glass of wine in each hand :O)
Good luck Rachael - that's a big leap! Some of Thomas's P levels are 8 and others are 3 - so given his communication levels he really is an unusual chappie!! It's called a spikey profile - a great professional told me that was because we have always exposed Thomas to everything we do instead of letting his autism take the lead. I think the camping will help us to further that - next stop is a theme park for a couple of days!
Im pleased to hear it went well for you .We took my friend, her mom and her brother last weekend camping. The mom has just recovered from having 11 gallstones removed and as she hadnt had a holiday in 26 years so off we went. The brother has Aspergers, first time on holiday, and he loved it .He had a bit of an issue with getting in the van and then coming into the tent, but once he did it ,in his own time, he was brill.Pity the weather turned against us as we had to come home early.
Hi Ali2 I am sooooo delighted to read of the very successful camping trip, the first of many many more to come
Dont get to upset by the opinion of the "proffessionals" they cant foresee the future for your boy, believe me my Thomas has definitely exceeded mine and others expectations so there is always hope.
