Even the makers of the stuff say good hand hygiene and that hot soapy water and a rinse for small items and to use the sprays on large areas that cannot easily be rinsed after cleaning eg worksurfaces. They are designed to work on an already cleaned surface. Wipe a chopping board down with them alone and you'll do a grand job of spreading the bugs around. There is evidence from Japan about a specific strain of MRSA developing in association with use of certain antibacterials. There is plenty of information about alcohol hand rubs and how (and when) they are effective.

Yes, that's pretty much what I do & what I was saying clunty. I'd never personally rely purely on Dettox (or anything similar) but I do think it has it's place.

As regards the "we've got by without this before" stance, we got by without lots of things in the past but that's not to say that new practices (& substances) have not reduced illnesses & diseases since they came into use. It's also true, I do agree, that overuse, & wrongly prescribing/using danti-biotics - & other things (like maybe even my trusty Dettox !) can have the opposite effect.

As with so many things it's about maintaining a balance & keeping things in perspective really - as well as the `appliance of science' oh those ads again !
