Girlwomble and elanman - you're right, chemistry is compulsory in schools, but whether the kids actually remember to apply it in everyday life is another matter.

We can't eliminate all risks from our lives, but we should be warned of the obvious and avoidable dangers. There are people still camping who won't know anything about carbon monoxide. There should be a way to get the message across.

One way would be for campsites to have notices - big, red and yellow ones with a skull and crossbones - to tell people about fire hazards and CO poisoning. The shorter and simpler the better.

There's a piece in today's Guardian about a man who's wife was killed in a tragic case of monoxide poisoning...He's a forensic scientist who should know better than most about the dangers involved. Shows it can happen to anybody.
Just go to The Guardian website and type *carbon monoxide* into the search box and it will take you to the item....I can't seem to copy and paste links.

I actually wish there was a "big book of risks" rated by activity and probability. Statistics play a part in peoples perception but its always skewed by the numbers of people doing the activity. Perhaps because camping is a "minority" activity then the number of deaths this way is small and its ignored by the press and therfore some campers are not aware. I wish the media had picked this up more as its more of an issue than Simon Cowells latest conquests !

That's terrible news. The campsite we went to in may had posters everywhere reminding campers of the dangers of carbon monoxide in tents. And what to avoid doing. We thought this was really good. And was the norm on all sites?

It goes to show, even when the BBQ is stone cold, well and truly out, it still emits dangerous Carbon Monoxide.

He brought it in, to stop it becoming wet in the rain. Otherwise, if it was still warm, he would not have done so.

It was such bad luck, as he said that they took an alarm, where ever they travelled, didn't think about taking it camping with them.

A very sad article indeed EVERYONE needs to share that guardian article to their Facebook account.. Ask friends to re share.

I can remember when my wife and I first started camping, bringing our little suitcase stove into the tent and zipping it all up to try and stay warm.. Wouldn't dream of it now, but when you start out many people just don't consider these things.. Share
