How about playing some board games, going for a walk, listening to a cd, listening to a radio.

I rarely watch television, at home or away, but I fail to understand why television should be taboo but cd's and radio should be acceptable.

Personally we dont bother with a TV or anything. We dont have time to watch the TV anyway! With such stressfull lives we also feel the need to get away from everything when we camp. We dont mind family noise/dogs etc 'coz its all part of the atmosphere. Every campsite we have been to is quiet b4 midnight and thats fine by us coz we are tired by then anyway!

Everything on a camp site/tent is naturally louder due to the lack of walls/people being outside and playing games etc (FACT!!!) We take badminton/rounders/cricket/football etc and tell ghost stories around the camp fire/play charades at night. Yer we make a bit of noise - its called laughter/having a good time. If anyone thinks theres anything strange about this then you may want to have your holidays in a convent!! It's difficult to communicate by whisper and I haven't learnt sign language yet either!!!

If we were upsetting anyone by laughing/being a bit noisy then I would not be offended if they 'had a quiet word' with us- coz if it was the other way around I would not hesitate to have a word with them!

Live and let live!!

When I first thought about getting EHU both my girls started complaining that they didn't want it!!!....I asked them why & both said thwey didn't want t.v.

I explained that I wasn't getting EHU for the T.V. but for lamps & a heater....they settled & have been fine since we got EHU.

How old are they??????? ...11 & 14

I'm soooo glad my kids have been brought up with camping.... how many 11/14year olds don't want T.V., nintendo, etc???????????????????????

Exactly... last year I went to a lovely campsite in the lakes.
very quiet, just a field with kids playing...sun shining.
went for a bit of a walk...admiring all the tents (as you do!!) then saw this little boy of about 6/7 ...sat inside the tent whatching a DVD!!!????!!!!

right, ive read all your posts, and yes i can agree with both sides, but you may have to remember, that yes it is nice to get away, leaving all the stresses back home, enjoying the countryside, letting  your children use their imagination, but when you have a mentally and physically disabled child that does not cope with change at the best of times, he does need some of his comforts from home. He has learned to make friends out of complete strangers in a few hours, a major achievement for him,  learnt to sleep  in a ready bed,and having to wear pjs before bedtime, to stay warm   before he gets cold, we have to make a comprimise somewhere along the line to help the experience of the camping trip enjoyable for the rest of the family. The playstation etc stays at home, but dvd player and tv come with us, would be hell on earth on a rainy day stuck in a tent with him, as he hates the cold and wet, so you try and take him sightseeing then!!!!! Both him and his younger brother have been admired for the  fantstastic manners and behaviour, so we cant be doing much wrong By the way if you happen to see  two boys running around the beach in just their shorts and t-shirts, mum hugging her fleece with a windbreak around her and dad beach casting, thats us.HAPPY DAYS

Camping is about whatever you choose it to be , its also about not imposing your type of holiday on others who may lik esomething different.

For the record I dont take tv etc and I only have a problem with those that do when I cant enjoy my holiday for them enjoying theirs.

Very well said, cant stand these 'holier than thou' attitudes. Each to their own, it's your holiday, if you want to take a tele, ignore the snipers and take one

Many thanks for all the posts, but this thread ends here, we've been over this over and over, and it seldom ends in anything but a slanging match

Cheers

Ian
