Hi again.G/flick.
What the real point of this post is about is, the concern of people new to camping ,they are not sure as to the safety of their possessions, and we who have been camping for a few years. it is hour job to try and tell the new campers what to expect, and a post like this brings out all what people think and the points put across by them will not be lost on our new members,
Surely for a newbie camper a better way to approach this issue then would be to give the sensible precautions that we all generally take first, with maybe a short note at the end of the post saying something along the lines of 'if you are still really worried, you could try an alarm' rather than going on about buying personal intruder alarms first? That would be far clearer and representative of the real state of affairs.
Quote:
No I personally don't think you need a portable alarm on 95% of the camp site we use,
So why are you saying that we should all buy them?
Quote: ...
I have bought one because I know they are reliable and have used one before. I will take it with me to the sites that are a little susceptible to thieving and these site are were I have been in the past and I use for my birdwatching. Because I have been a lot to them I suppose I get to know the history of the site and they are probably no more susceptible to thieving than any other
That's your choice, but is there any need to be causing additional worry to new campers by writing a post that makes it sound like theft from tents is a major problem that happens all the time when in fact it does not seem to be?
Quote:
But the post as brought this to campers attention it as been made pretty clear that most don't think they are required and alternative suggestions have been put forward
Not all recommended ((THE MOO ))
All the best
Rex.
PS I think most will agree with this comment. You have more chance of getting your possessions stolen from your house than from your tent.
Hopefully any newbie campers will read the whole post and realise that MOST people here do not think that they are necessary, rather than being scared away from camping altogether.
Are you sure you're not on commission to sell them?

Were did I say you should buy one,
You may not have specifically say 'you should buy one', but throughout the thread you've advocated and even recommended their use.
Quote: It is clear that you have not read and understood this post.
I've actually followed the thread with interest, and as you started the thread with the comment "I never thought I would see the day when Thieves would force us campers to try to secure our tents." and later continued it "Once these thieves realise how easy it is to raid a camping site it will soon get around and we all need to be prepared, and keep away from site that are close to towns." I took it that you were warning about this as a major problem. Although you were talking about your own reasons for purchasing an alarm, I considered (note my opinion) that your comments could themselves cause alarm to new campers.
Quote: We all are capable of picking bits of post out, that is not a clever thing to do rather despicable if you ask me,
As I have quoted your post almost in it's entirety, I don't believe that I've selected information out of context. I only commented on your post as I believe that if your purpose was as stated in your later post, perhaps your original post was not the best way to highlight the issue in a newbie-friendly manner. I haven't 'picked bits out', mearly seperated your post so that I could deal with each point in turn, and so that my response could be easily understood, I apologise if I've caused confusion by not quoting your earlier post(s) which you now seemed to be contradicting - bad of me to assume that everyone else would have read the whole thread and understand to what I was referring.
Quote: I will now look forward to reading all the help you yourself offer the new campers on this forum.
Thanks, I know I haven't been around for a while, but I have in the past and do still offer new campers advice, when I feel I can give it, as you will see if you look around the forum.
Quote: no hard feeling though, It is good to have a bit of banter and also have the ability to take it as well as give it.
Of course - debate and discussion are not to get heated over, we are after all each allowed our own opinions.
Quote: I will not reply to any more comments made on this post now as it is played out, But thanks to all that took part in the post for your input.
All the best
Rex
Fair enough, it's been interesting.
Happy camping
