A good size washing up bowel
[P
Good point, we bought four cheap washing up bowls, they stack inside each other for easy packing and we use them for all sorts of things as well as washing up! Including keeping beer cold!
Welcome to UKCS and well done on coming back to camping - a great family holiday choice! I fully agree with you about wanting to maintain SOME simplicity, and we have avoided getting EHU for precisely that reason. I fully understand why people with children may prefer it as it is safer than gas for heat and light if you have little uns around, though.
One of the best inventions is the head torch - ok you look a bit of a dork with it on yer head, but when scrabbling around looking for something in the darker corners of the tent it really can't be beaten, as the light points wherever you are looking and you have both hands free. We use ours constantly - very good for reading in bed too!

A good size washing up bowel, liquid, brushes cloths and scourers etc! You'd be surprised how many campsites don't have plugs (they get pinched, for goodness sake!).
Fleece blankets (cheap ones, Ikea do some and the supermarket chains often have some in) for if it turns chilly.
Carrier bags for rubbish and a bin bag to carry your mucky groundsheet home.
OMG, I just realised what I wrote; I did of mean a good size washing up BOWL!!!!!
Thanks so much for all the suggestions, I've read them all through and noted several things. Great advice here, like the bin-bag for a dirty groundsheet, hot water bottles (inspired!), and large bowels. LOL

Great stuff. And thanks again to ALL.
Yes - if you remember the large bowels then it does not matter if you end up pitched 3 miles away from the facilities!!
You seem to have done alright with your list. My own priorities are:
Be warm at night - don't scrimp on sleeping bags or beds - especially at this time of year.
Get some seriously tough tentpegs that'll hammer down through stony ground - those that come with tents are pretty weedy.
A gas burner for your kettle.
When we came into camping (1999) we didn't know if either we or the kids would take to it, so we didn't want to spend too much. Luckily, we got exceptionally good advice in the store we went to (we were so green thay could have palmed any tat onto us), & the £400 we spent got us all of the above.
Of course year on year one adds to or changes stuff - wouldn't like to add it all up now!
