Hi, 1st time poster here. Just looking some thoughts on the size of tents u well seasoned campers prefer to use when there are only 2 of u. My wife and I have a Khyam Biker which is great for the odd night or two here and there when following our favourite sport of motorcycling but we are keen to buy another larger tent for longer breaks and decent holidays at home and abroad.

We went today to a Scoutshop outdoor display in Belfast and saw a very nice Gelert Quebec 8 + 4 which to my untrained eye did not look like a large family tent. I would just consider it to be a very roomy tent for 2 to spend any length of time in together. So the question is: Do 2 persons buy tents this size or would we look like some sort of social misfits on the campsite?

Many thanks.

Hi Bangorblue, I find it difficult to advise others because if it doesn't work then I feel it's my fault (well that's the disclaimer out of the way...)

It's really your preference, sometimes a 6 berth is quite cramped and a 4 or 5 berth is just right.

So you pays yer money and you takes yer choice.

Remember to have a really good look round at what's available.

Mmm well perhaps the Troll and I are just plain greedy, but we find we need the biggest tent we can lay our pinkies on. In mitigation for our sins, Troll is 6ft6 and has limbs like a gibbon - having spent an uncomfortable time having things continually knocked over by him in a 6 berth tent we have now got an Aztec Cantera 12. This is also useful because Mini-troll is well over 4ft at the age of 5 and shows every sign of being as bad as his father.

We aren't minimal campers and by the time we get all our junk in there it doesn't feel like a barn . So my advice is, think about whether you are 'roomy' or 'cosy' people and buy accordingly!

Must admit when I first read your post I thought why such a big tent then looked it up and looking at the overall plan think its great for two..spare room for storage good sized living area and what an excellent price...why do I always see tents I really fancy just after I have bought one..

We have a Coleman Sahara (about 4yrs old now). We chose it because it has 2 large 'rooms' and it is stand -up height all the way through. We keep one room set up as our bedroom with king size airbed . the other is the 'lounge'! We are definitely not minimalist campers - we camp abroad for 3 wks at a time and like our comforts(durries on the floor, electric kettle and heater etc.)  Our tent gives us as much if not more room than a small caravan and 'tin tenters abroad are always interested to have a look.  After a 4hr thunder storm with torrential rain (our best yet!) in Germany last year our German and Dutch neighbours were surprised the next morning that we were  a) still standing and  b) that we were bone dry!  As one said of our tent "is heavy duty, jah?"

Don't worry, it isn't actually that big for an 8 man tent.   We've just got a new 6 man tent for 2 of us which is bigger than that (the living area is larger).  We had a much smaller tent but found that we by the time we had 2 weeks worth of clothes, 2 sets of camera kit, tripods etc, plus our bikes (when there was nowhere safe to store them) we could barely get in the tent, let alone set up a table and chairs.  It really depends on how you like to travel.  Like I say we take our bikes and camera kit as well as 2 inflatable canoes and paddles so don't exactly travel light and if you are away for a while it is good to be able to sit inside if it rains.

We have a wynnster Indus 6 (berth) for a family of three, I always think the more room the better, ideal for when its raining you dont want to be squashed up staring at each other, spread out and stare at each other instead LOL xx

When we camped as a couple we had various tents, the last one being a Coleman bi-space something, I can't remember that exact model number. It was probably a 3 or 4 berth tent but really just right for 2. We had plenty of room in the bedroom for our double airbed and a few other bit and bobs. The living space was plenty big enough to relax in. We used to go away in that for about 10 days and never felt cramped although most of the time we kept our clothes in the car, we didn't have tons of equipment either so I think that helps.

Now we're a family of 4, we've got what is classed as a 4-berth tent but its a big 4-berth tent, again clothes stay in the car. Its suits us fine although so far we've only been away for 3 nights in it.

Looking forward to camping this year and checking out all the tents out there.

I think you should do as you please. Go along to a display, see what you like and go for it. It's your camping holiday after all.
