There are 2 camps on this one - some folks say the insulation is best placed between you and the airbed (to provide a layer between your warm bod and that slab of cold air!) others say to put it under the airbed to seal it from the cold ground.
Frankly I have tried both and find that insulation between you and the airbed is the most crucial layer, but a layer under the airbed too definitely adds more - so we do both and it eliminates condensation build up and damp bedding!
We have foam camping mats underneath, and a fleece blanket under our sleeping bags. Other folks on here have found that the insulating stuff you use with wooden floors makes a cheap and effective layer. An old quilt or sleeping bag would also do the trick, there is no need to splash out on anything fancy.
