I'd go for glow sticks - as they are fun as well. The light isn't too bright - but enough, especially if you have a couple of them. What's more they can now ne bought really cheaply. I am beginning to build up my collection now. Some of the thin ones, and a few big ones. Necklaces 59p a time from a local shop. Don't miss it when I pop in for a couple of other bits - and buy summer I should have a couple each for them, along with a couple of tubs of the thin ones, which can if need be, be given to other kids that they are playing with.
Yes -I use that seller quite often - they are very fast and reliable, and they have several types and designs of glowsticks, so you need never be bored!
The glowstick contains two chemicals and a suitable fluorescent dye (sensitizer, or fluorophor). The chemicals in the plastic tube are a mixture of the dye and a derivate of phenyl oxalate ester (also called Cyalume). The chemical inside the glass vial is concentrated (about 35%) hydrogen peroxide. By mixing the peroxide with the phenyl oxalate ester, a chemical reaction takes place; the ester is oxidized, yielding two molecules of phenol and one molecule of peroxyacid ester. The peroxyacid decomposes spontaneously to carbon dioxide, releasing energy that excites the dye, which then deexcites by releasing a photon. The wavelength of the photon depends on the structure of the dye.

Remind me not to enter a quiz when you are around!
Basically some chemicals are kept apart inside the glowstick until you 'snap' them. Once they mix, light is given off. It lasts a whole night - and even longer if you keep them in the fridge (according to my kids! - .... but you can't see them in the fridge ..??!! )
Well back safe n sound, poundland had no glowsticks so had push light which batteries ran out b4 she went to sleep!!!!!!nightmare so had huge candle(i know meg fire hazzard sorry) in metal pan in middle of tent.that was ok as she was awake every half hour(or felt like that) was cold!the temp did really drop during night so thinking bout getting hook up and a heater then can use some sort of lamp and all robs sorted!site we went to wasnt the best, not be there again haha ,all i can say is the wine helped!wasnt impressed with the cockerel at 530am!!!
Thank you FishDude for the low down on the glowsticks-they sound great and hopefully the kids will think they are a novelty and go to bed even earlier!!
Sorry about your trip sheila but hope it hasn't put you off!! Don't know why you didn't try the wine for your daughter!! As for the cockerel you obviously didn't drink enough!
We find the EHU invaluable and after our 2nd trip and our 2nd time of our son waking up having a seizure as he was cold succumbed to it-the people in a neighbouring caravan took pity and lent us their little fan heater! we went to Argos next day and bought one and all our problems have been resolved! Oh yes and also bought him a thick camping junior sleeping bag-now you can't wake him up in the morning!
Nah i dont get put off that easily!!! will try wine on the kids next time tho heehee.
Been out n bought ehu,be a posh camper now,do you leave fan heater on all night? read people use oil filled radiators too but theyre quite bign will take up lots of space in the car(not enough room left for the wine..or maybe just wont take food for kids)
So going away next weekend..weather permitting and will be warmer....
....and may take a shot gun for them bloody cockerels!!!!
