We bought an Indiana 6 last year but only managed one weekend away in it, and pitched it once in the garden.  As we're planning to go away in a few weeks' time, we thought we'd have another go today to refresh our memories!  We had quite a few problems pitching and need some help!

Our main problem is that all 3 times we have pitched it it has ended up lopsided - as you're looking at the tent from the front door it is pulled to the right and the left hand side is too far off the ground.  There is no adjustment on the right hand side and the left hand side is tensioned as much as it can be without ripping.

The way we have pitched it is as follows:

  • Lay out tent fully
  • Put in curved poles in sleeves
  • Add legs
  • Peg back corners and guy out back
  • Raise tent and walk it forward
  • Guy out front (just to hold - to be adjusted later)
  • Attach ring and pin  - right side first (with the tension straps undone)
  • Pull tent out fully so it's not sagging
  • Peg out front corners
  • Attach tension straps and adjust ring and pin straps on left side
  • Finish pegging out

Does anyone have any bright ideas how we can make it easier in future?  We are concerned that there is a fault with the tent as we can't see any way of pitching so that it's not lopsided but if anyone can help we would be most grateful!  Thanks in advance!

Hi Gretchel!

I dont think I can be of much help, but wanted to get rid of your blue face! This site is so friendly and helpful that I am sure somebody will be along soon who can offer you some specific advice

We also have a Indi 6, and have pitched it twice in preparation for our first trip away next weekend. We pitch differently to you - mainly due to the OH disregarding the instructions, but looking at it in the garden now I have to say it doesnt look lopsided, just a bit saggy where it is too big to stretch out fully in our tiny garden!

Our biggest problem has been getting the 2nd ring and pins in - yesterdays attempt involved liberal use of a mallet and apologies to the neighbours for the language, so maybe you could advise me how you do that bit?  Having said that, it went up in an hour and is still standing so we are well pleased!

Hope you get your problem sorted soon.

We have the motana which is very similar and we found this is the best way of pitching:

Lay out tent, ensure all tension adjusters are as long as they will go.

Peg all four corners

Open all doors and walk inside and lift to get air in (you wont need to do this as the indiana has no SIG.)

put in all roof poles.

Put in front leg poles only, lift, put in pins and peg front guys (the trick with getting it even is to make sure the fly is even on the roof poles before you put the pins in.)

continue in the same way with each set of roof and leg sections one at a time.

Peg out rear guys.

Adjust all legs, walking in/out, back/forward as necessary. Peg all legs, and adjust tension straps as necessary.

peg all points on the fly and all guys.

Put in porch pole and peg porch.

Done!

I hope this is of help, the main thing to remember is to lossen all tension straps before you start (we do this each time we srtike the tent so its all set to go next time).

And to take the time to ensure the sleves on the roof are even across the roof pole BEFORE putting in the pin (this is easier if you lift before pinning, contrey to what Outwell tell you to do).

Well we have tried again this morning and now my husband is away up to the camping shop for them to have a look at it! (luckily they're local!)  It just seems that the actual tent is too tight for the poles - we put the right hand side in first which pulls the nylon of the tent down over the curve in the poles on that side, and on the other side it is too high up which means there is a gap of about 6"  on that side.  As long as the tension straps are loosened to their maximum we can get the ring and pins in if we do the rhs first then the lhs, but there is no way to straighten it after this.  So we shall see what the shop says and maybe we will be looking at another tent!  We like the space of the indiana but the hassle of pitching that particular one is enough to put us off camping for life!

I will keep you posted...

I take it you have looked at the Outwell Indiana 6 pitching vid:

Granted it's not exactly comprehensive ( lol ). It's more of a "here's one I prepared earlier" approach, but there...

Yes we've watched it - like you say it's not exactly informative!  But thanks anyway - think we will just have to go on what the camping shop people say - the guy we spoke to today has pitched an Indiana before and when my husband described what problems we were having he thought it sounded unusual - so in a way we're hoping that it's a defective tent and we can start again.

Don't lose hope gretchel, we had to return our origonal Monty as we had a similar problem, but with ours it was the front that was way too high. The shop we bought it from said the SIG had been cut too short, they exchanged it for the 2007 model which goes up like a dream.

Please don't let this put you off camping, just put it down to experience.

Gretchel's OH here ... The shop put it up and said it was ok but came out to go through it with us. We put it up in the back garden with their help (about the fifth time in 3 days ) and it was much easier this time (a few handy hints from the experts makes a world of difference ). Once it was fully up however, it was still a little lopsided and the front pole was ridiculously tight. I spoke with the shop again today and they have been great. They are going to request a new flysheet from Outwell as they agree that it is not as it should be. 10/10 for Outriggers (www.outriggers-camping.co.uk) . They've been very supportive and helpful.

The method we now use to put the tent up is as follows:
  1. Lay out flysheet and peg back corners and back center. Release all tensioners on LHS ring and pin.

  2. Feed in back curved pole, add legs and attach ring and pin (with strap connected). For the ring and pin do the RHS first. On the LHS, get someone to pull the sleeve towards the LHS while you put the pin in. Once the ring and pin is in on both sides move the pole backwards as far as it can go.

  3. Repeat the process for the other poles.

  4. Lift up all poles together and walk them forward until the tent is properly spaced out.

  5. Peg the central guy down to hold the tent up and then adjust the spacing of the poles as required.

  6. Tighten the tensioners on the LHS starting from the back and working forward. We had to repeat this 3 times to get close to even.

  7. Peg out and then guy up.

  8. Fit groundsheet and then collapse in a heap on the grass with a cold beer and a smug grin on your face

  9. Make a mental note that when you collapse on the grass the dog thinks you are fair game for an attack which results in a rather unpleasant face wash (really must get some mouthwash for that dog!). Choose higher ground next time!

Hopefully the new flysheet will make all the difference. We'll keep you posted!
