Sorry to read that, Bernie.

I did not mean to imply in my earlier post that EHU is the work of the devil - its not, we had one years ago, sold it because it was proving unhelpful, but have been given one this year which we used at Easter for running the fridge.

Rather I was just trying to make the point that EHU is not essential for light, cooking, cooling or warmth - all of those can be provided by gas and/or batteries. If people are starting out trying camping then buying an EHU does not have to be a priority buy.

I did buy an EHU as one of my first camping purchases and for us it was a mistake as it encouraged me to overload the car and setting up/take down times with too many  gadgets from home. Hopefully this time round I won't repeat that mistake! MT

That is very true MT.  We have just done a massive downsizing exercise as we found we were taking absolutely everything and then not using half of it when we got to the campsite.  Every year so far it has been more and more space required until this year we bought a full box trailer and have now find we fill it up.  If we had taken anymore stuff we might as well just have had the house moved brick by brick to the campsite.

Isn't the reality that until someone comes up with "wireless" electricity, areas with EHU are always likely to be in one area and as both caravans and tents use it you might end up being next to Caravans.

Wireless electricity already exists, it's called lightening.

We aren't backpackers by any means, but we have never considered an EHU as we like the freedom of being able to decide to go away at short notice - if you need hook-up you usually need to book in advance, but without it we can usually find a pitch with only a days notice. We also like to get away from it all - you might as well be a tin-tenter of you like to take all your home comforts with you. We've seen tents lit up like Blackpool illuminations, with a TV blasting, and the occupants never seem to come out and enjoy the clear nights and the stars!
