I have been reading this thread with interest as it is the main problem I encounter when camping....How to keep the darn milk from going off!!!!

Has anyone tried UHT on cereal.....is it too bad to bear???? As I think I like the idea of taking that for the tea, it doesn't really bother me or oh too much but the kids do like their cereal in the morning and the last time we went it meant a trip to the shop every morning to buy some fresh which was a pain in the.........

There are some things one should never compromise on, better to die of thirst than to drink instant coffee. UHT milk is fine and yes the organic ones such has Moo do taste a little better. Most supermarkets now do small 500 ml cartons of uht so you would not need to fill your cool box up. Now lets have no more talk of instant cappuccino etc, I am about to go to bed and will probable have nightmares

You see that's the response I entirely expect to get from my friends!!
. It's the response I'd give if someone suggested I give up my old fashioned perculator and only drank instant coffee!! I found a wonderful 1950's stove top peculator in a junk store for a £5. Its great for camping, wakes up the whole campsite with its aroma (try doing that with instant)

We're going to be in France so I think I might just go for the small cartons of UHT and see how badly the feel about it!

I have to say fresh milk is one thing I can't do without.  I'm a bit of a tea freak (e.g. won't drink anything unless it's Twinings, Whittards etc.)  and hate it unless it has semi skimmed fresh milk in it.  And I can't get going in the morning without it.

I use cool bags and iceblocks (a lot of sites have freezing facilitiies) and have recently got ehu so am going to get an electric coolbox.   Other than that, I find that milk will usually keep over night in this country, even in the summer,if you buy it late in the day and don't plan to use it beyond breakfast, keep it in a bucket of water in the shade.  .

I take ready made white tea. It comes in powder form and it's surprisingly nice, although the Tetley's one tasted like fish!
I also take powdered cappucino and latte for coffee, although we take regular fresh milk for cereal and it's always been fine, kept in the cool bag with the ice packs.

Yes, we like the Typhoo instant tea the best. And for the powdered cappuccinos etc. try Lidl's as they do them in tins rather than individual sachets ... and in different flavours too (vanilla, amaretto, etc) Would avoid the larger tins of Choco-cappuccino though - a bit artificial tasting IMO.

Several suggestions have been made to take the small individual portions of milk. We have tried this several times but given up - if they are left in a hot tent or a hot car they tend to 'pop' and at least break the seal so that they are no longer 'fresh' - at worst they cause a smelly mess.

My advice would be to pop to your local supermarket - get a few small cartons of different UHT/longlife milks and then do a taste test (get some friends round since you don't drink milk yourself). Longlife milk is much better these days and you can find some that taste really quite nice (think this is influenced from the continent where UHT milk is often the norm. Fresh milk there can taste a little odd because it is often really fresh and less "treated" than we have here!). It's less important in coffee / tea in my opinion than how it tastes on cereals.

We just buy ours fresh daily (family) and keep it in a cool box during the day.

We took those dinky milk portion pots of UHT that you get in service stations or in hotels (as I travel with my business, I tend to build up quite a collection before a camping trip). I know it's not very eco-friendly using a portion pot per cup of tea but I thought that the UHT in cartons need to be treated like normal milk once it's opened and we have no EHU etc.

Alternatively, just drink beer or wine?!

Another idea would be to forget tea and coffee and take hot chocolate. Aero make a delicious one which comes in individual sachets. Very creamy and bubbly - my kids love them. You buy boxes of 10 or 12 sachets I believe.
