I used to think insects were harmless, until last year when I was bitten by a horse-fly, and my arm swelled up to twice its size in about 20 minutes, totally numb. Took about 3 days to go down again.
Carrying piriton is a good idea.
Still, I used to camp in Kenya as a child, where we had 6-inch 'hunting' spiders running around the floor, snakes falling out of the firewood pile, snakes in sleeping bags, malarial mosquitos - the lot.
